I currently use ORC 4500 Watt bulbs in Strong Super Highlight II consoles. These are warranteed through 3000 Hrs. and I have never had a problem with them through this point. Of course, this may be due to the fact that all of our equipment is only two years old and management requires us to change these bulbs at 3000 Hrs., therefore not letting us test the true limits of the bulb. I also have had good experiences with Osram bulbs in the past.

A 4.5k bulb that is warranteed for 3000 Hours? ORC says the average on the 4.5K lamps is 1000 hrs., 1200 on only one of the 4.5k models. So my guess ir that they are warranteed at about 800-1000 Hrs., but enough of this.

I think it really depends on what lamphouse/power supply you use. Different brands seem to like different bulbs. IMHO use what works for your equipment.

Hard to tell, every company undergoes a phase of bad quality. OK, some lamps are of doubtably quality, have you ever seen a soviet lamp called "Razno" - Made in USSR? Or the mentioned Chinese lamps.
I have had best results with Osram lamps, constant light output and next to no blackening, and have able to run the 2k lamp for about 4k hours.
I have been very unhappy with ORC. It has been the only lamp maker that supplied 5 lamps in a row with production quality problems, and finally two lamps exploded within 40 seconds of initial start. What value is in "the industrie's best warranty"? The only warranty I need is very basic, a one which you'll never need.
Ushio has worked oK, but did never last as long as the Osram bulb.
Pricewise a bulb is not a big deal, compared to the other costs in running a theatre, assuming, that A/C on an average theatre will cost much more than 10 times in electricity per show, than your bulb costs.

I'll add my 2 cents, short + sweet.
1)OSRAM: Best looking light, longest lasting without a flicker and darkening of bulb.
2) Christie: Okey, but definately a level down from Osram in all categories.
3) ORC: The fact that it doesn't even come in a shield protector tells you how cheap it is and how much the company values our safety. In my opinion the bulbs suck, they only last a very few hundred hours.

And by the way: USE the face shield, protective gloves and body shield. If it explodes and your injured, you won't have a leg to stand on with workers comp if you didn't use protective equipment. Management must supply all 3 items or I would refuse to change a bulb. Even a cold bulb changed very carefully can explode in your face!

Yeah, we like Osram, too. We use the XBO3000WH-OFR, and get 3500 to 4000 hours out of them. I used to think Osram sucked (short life) but when we put in new equipment, our tech guy really figured out how to properly cool the lamp. Now they last much longer.

I just had a lot of grief from some Toshiba lamps in some FujiCentral vertical lamphouses this weekend
It is scarry that Toshiba is making the proprietary lamp in the new Panasonic DLP projector

I sure is not Q-Arc. I had another blow up last night. It was an XQ-3000 with 949 hours.

That's the second one that blew up. The first one blew at 350 hours, in a different lamphouse. I checked the third bulb in service, and I think I will pull it very soon. It had about 975 hours, and it does not look very good.

Paul

Both were in the Strong Super Lumex.

Think we will go back to Christie bulbs.

XQ-3000 I hope that wasn't meaning a 3000 watt lamp
the superlumex is designed for a max of 2500 watts

Gordon:

ooooooOOOOOOOOoooooooo! I'll have to check that immediately. There are 3000 watt lamps in all three Super Lumex's at this theater, coupled to switcher power supplies. I better check those power supplies to see what they are, also. The installer set these up to run at 100 amps. I have not changed that setting.

Thank you for the "heads up" tip!

I am at the theater now, and yes, they are XQ-3000 H/S bulbs in a 2500 watt lamphouses. The switcher power supplies (Strong International) are rated at 50 to 100 amps, 20 to 30 volts DC. Model # 628000 5. I looked at the remnants of the bulb that blew up, and the anode has 3 melt-down bumps straight across the anode face, with a 4th bump below the center one. I never saw anything like that before....not with a 3 phase power supply.

What do you think?

Paul

I am currently using a 7kw Ushio Lamp and so far impressed with the quailty & light.

My main choice however is with the Osram, but I was not impressed with their 7kw xenon's I used last year in a console setup that seam to go unstable after 200hrs!.

I know that a lot of people here seem to dislike them, but I really like LTI lamps. They haven't been around very long, and they had some production problems in the first few months...but things have improved greatly now. I still really like Osram lamps also, but I have been putting my money on the LTI's for the past year.

How interesting for this to come back up ... we talked about it briefly in the chat room last night.

I'm running 7k Osrams vertically, and after about 200 hours the arc starts to dance around pretty bad. Christies seem to have held up a little better in this position.

Gordon said good things about the 7k Superior Quartz lamps ... anyone else have comments on them?

Paul the lamphouse I don't think can provide the correct stabalization for the larger sized 3K lamp even though electrically it is OK at 100 amps. ALso I doubt the lamphouse internal airflow is correct for the lamps dimensions

Gordon, that may be why I saw the weird bumps on the anode. The stabilization magnets (if there are any - I didn't look) probably did not like that setup. However, the bulb did not show any signs of over-heating. But it still could have.
