There's an original 70mm release print of Flying Machines still around in the UK, which Darren showed in York on Easter Sunday this year. Great sound, but the print is now very pink. The image looks like 8mm blown up to 70mm. No wait, I've got 8mm that looks better than that 70mm print does. Anyway, it looks like crap with softball sized grain. The print looked indeed very good, almost completely clean except for the very few light scratches already mentioned. Some shots looked a little older than the rest, apparently they couldn't find material in top condition for the restoration for these. But these were only a couple of very brief moments. The mag stripe may well have something to do with that, especially if the print has been stored in conditions of hiigh humidity. Maybe it's just my hearing, but I can hear detail (especially HF) in a six-channel 70mm mix that I just can't pick up in any digital sound I've ever heard in a cinema. It's like the difference between domestic sound played through a cheap CD player versus an obscenely expensive hi-fi geek turntable, playing a decent LP with no more than 15 minutes per side. May even be a part 2 also. would have to check my list. There are 100 70mm prints stroed in Deluxe Film in Perivale, some multiple prints of some titles like 'Indy-Last Crusade' I had 3 prints of it at once a couple of months ago! Its allways best to get the print and run it fully, as I have a print of Gandhi, which has perfect picture but some reels have sound damage. Darren  |  IP: Logged
