OK, here's the quick chronology for those who care: first, the backhoe cut the line that provides Brad's net connection. Then, FT was back online for a bit less than a day once the line was fixed. Soon thereafter, the motherboard in the server machine apparently fried itself, so I had to put up the "FT is down" page again. Everything is back up again running on temporary hardware. None of this had anything to do with the unfortunate events which occurred on Tuesday.

Paul -- a T1 is a copper telephone wire which has some special characteristics (among other things, the signal is digital rather than analog and there are devices along the wire to boost the signal strength) which allow high-bandwidth connectivity--the result is essentially the same thing as 24 standard analog lines combined into one. In Brad's case, the T1 is carrying data, but the same type of circuit can be used for voice applications as well.

Paul, regarding the definition of a T1...

Sorry to move into John P. territory here, but I have found the best source for technology definitions to be
http://whatis.techtarget.com/

This site has everything from basic definitions to detailed explanations of things such as routers & switches (the world that I live in)and detailed technical notes.

Most everything is cross-linked, so you can click on any term you don't understand.

Scott and Mark, thanks for the information on the T1 lines.

Here in NJ some of us still have no lines. I had to run out and buy a cheap modem because DSL has been down since the tragedy. All the high speed stuff here in this area of the state runs through the Verizon building right next to ground zero. We don't expect any service until at least next week, since the priority is getting the NYSE lines up again. I haven't used a POTS line since last year and didn't even have an operational modem in the computer. I missed all the poop here and didn't even know you were down!

So why did it go down again today?

DSL is going strong in ND

Those pictures of the disaster still bring tears to my eyes.
My thought and prayers are of those who are in great need and sadness.

There was no interruption today. Stop using the Internet Explorer browser and watch the problems go away. IE has serious cacheing issues.

Sean asked: "Has anyone heard from John P?"

Thanks for the concern. I'm based in Rochester NY, and just spent a week in NYC in late August. The NYC office of Kodak Motion Picture is on West 31st Street (3 miles north of the WTC) so fortunately they are all safe. Likewise most of our NYC customers are in midtown. But many have lost loved ones or friends.

Kodak people have been very saddened and moved to action by this tragegy. Like many others around the world, Tuesday was spent in quiet groups watching the events unfold. By the end of the week, Kodak was expediting products like medical x-ray film, forensic films, and document scanners, along with support people, to NYC and Washington to aid in the recovery and investigation efforts.

Later in the week, I moved to a new office in Rochester. Although it was just down the hall from my old one, there was a SNAFU moving my network connection. So I'm linking in from home, until my work system is connected again.

If you had trouble, clearing the catch will work (or you could clear cookies). Also, for aol users (it may work on tohers too) you can click reload while holding ctrl, and that should update the catche and the cookie. Hope this helps!!!

Many ISP's also use a proxy cache, and it won't matter if you clear your browser cache or not because what you are getting is a page from your ISP's computer. This usually doesn't affect dynamic pages like the forum. But it will affect the front page, and if the front page says "Brad tripped over the T1 wire. We're still trying to figure out how to plug it back in. Sorry for the interruption" you will get that page until your ISP updates its cache.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, cache should be illegal.

Web caching isn't necessarily evil (and can actually be good) _if_ and only if the caching proxy obeys META tags and doesn't cache pages which are explicitly marked as "no cache." Unfortunately, well-behaved caching proxies are relatively uncommon.

There are actually some very sophisticated web caching schemes that can provide major performance improvements (something like Akamai's Edgesuite service comes to mind, although there are others). Caching is also important to non-http protocols; for example, well-behaved caching servers are vital to the efficient operation of DNS (domain name system), which provides the mapping between hostnames and IP addresses of net-connected machines.

The real problem isn't so much web caching in general, but rather ill-behaved caching proxies which cannot be easily turned off or circumvented.

Thanks Christopher. it cleared my problem on two computers.

I use IE 5.5, and presently I am quite happy with it. Netscape rots. It wants to hog up my computer too much, and wants to tell me what IT wants to do, rather than what I want to do.

Fine.

Ill-behaved caching proxies should be illegal!
