Art houses only SRD? Not really. The Hollywood Egyptian, which is an arthouse, they have run many DTS 70mm shows as well as DTS 16mm shows. NONE of these films were available in SRD. More and more "art" releases are getting DTS.

Karen, 16mm and 70mm are not what I would consider "typical" formats, even moreso in the art house world. I know dts is trying to get their system printed on more art house films, but as it stands right now if there is some kind of digital sound on an art house film, it WILL be at least Dolby Digital. One local art house has confirmed that about 1 movie every 3 months comes in dts, all the rest that have any kind of digital come in SRD.

I'm not knocking the dts format, but let's look at this with a realistic point of view. There is simply no reason to install dts in an art house.

That's great to hear Gordon. So what you are saying is that in Toronto the local art houses play almost every movie in SR. That's almost as smart as putting in an endless loop platter in a screening room. It's the wrong tool for the job.

I've nothing against dts in first run or sub run theaters. In fact dts is probably a smarter choice for a sub run theater, but it is a useless format in an art house.

At the Berlin Film Festival we run countless numbers of "arthouse" movies from all over the world every year, and I have seen very few which had dts. A great many of them don`t even have SR-D.
The only general exception seems to be Indian movies which usually have dts. Since India has several official languages, dts is an obvious format choice for them.
Many international art movies have Mono and quite a few are in Dolby A. I understand you don`t have to pay fees anymore for A-type encoding, so that is probably why many smaller productions have it. Japanese movies often have dts Stereo.
Discs supply is no real problem here. The discs are almost always there.

Maybe in Canada dts is a preferred format for arthouse releases since they also have two official languages? Or is that only in Quebec?
