I have won as well as a couple of my projectionist to boot. It is real. As far as the recycle thing, I really wish I knew what they did with them. I have been told that they are "recycled" by Paramount and Fox but in what way, I do not know.

I've been returning trailers for years, and have never won squat. Ditto from the "Fox Rewards" program. I don't think they give a rat's a*s about the independents. We do it anyway, as long as the companys pay the return. Just trying to be environmentally friendly.

Two Comments:

Two of our theatres (our original two) are arthouse. Been in operation for 10 years and 7 years. Never had a problem getting art house trailers (although you usually have to order them yourself).

As far as mainstream...I have thrown away trailers for nearly two decades...but now I have taken to stuffing them in film cans when they are to be shipped out.

The Fox rewards program is real ladies and gents!! From my last management job I now have a kick ass toaster, a dvd player, a nice watch, and an alarm clock. All you need to do is just do whatever promo they are rewarding for (even as small as a bus shelter

) snap a polaroid and send it in. Then sit back and wait for your prizes. Never did return trailers though, sent alot to the second runs in the area.

Wes,

You've never had any trouble getting art house trailers? What magic trailer depot do you know about? I can give you a list of about a thousand titles that we can't get any trailers for....hell, just say it will be impossible to get a trailer for any picture that is more than two years old.

As for Fox and Paramount wanting their trailers returned, they sure aint doing it so the independents can get their hands on older trailers. Just call up Fox or Paramount and ask for a trailer from one of their older releases. They'll tell you, after they stop snickering, that they don't deal with trailers. I have to buy my trailers from collectors in order to get most of what I want.

Actually, I'll give you odds that it's their legal department concocting this return rewards thing, just so they can establish that their intent is always to retain property ownership of the physical entity. The copyright law doesn't protect their ownership of the trailer itself. With this return request in place, they can then legally argue that anyone selling trailers on eBay is selling their property, the rights to which they never intended to relinquish through abandonment to counter the "trailers in the dumpster" argument that is made by the collectors. They have made this claim about "their" trailers in ebay auctions on a number of occasions. It's all about power, not any desire they might have to make the trailers available to independent art houses. These companies dump good, runable PRINTS in the shredder because it costs them money to store and maintain a print library; you can be sure they are doing the same with any trailers which are return to them by those few houses that do it.

Best advice, all you commmercial guys....save the trailers for us art house/independent/second run cinemas. Be-friend a local art house!

I work at a 16 screen big chain theatre, and get extra trailers, but not many as we used to. 3 years ago, we were getting duplicate trailers in the tripple count of each new movie. Anyway, I will say being part of the Fox Rewards program is the best and most fun as I won last years Run through the Warehouse event and took home 7,000.00 in a 60 second shopping spree. I know how much now, cause of the taxes I now have to pay for the winnings. Atleast I'm using the FMV/ fair market value to reduce the amount of taxes I owe the IRS.

Anybody who does not return those CDs should be drawn and quartered. It is just as bad as not returning a reel.

And yet, DTS hasnt said a thing about it.
I haven't been returning them for the last few years. They just kind of hang around the booth and eventually get thrown away.

With the Fox Rewards program, you get a catalog yearly with everything in it from pen and pencil sets to small boats. Each is assigned a point value. All you do is "redeem" your points for whatever you want ... and yes, there are toasters in the catalog.

Tim, why dont you return the disks?
Its not like its a big hassle.
All you do is put them back in their cases, set them in the can, and wait for the film to be picked up.
You dont even have to save return labels, package them up, and make a phone call for them to be picked up like you would with trailers.
And like you said, they just sit there for a while until there thrown away.
It just doesnt make sense.

I guess the main reason is that noone remembers to take them out of the drives after tearing down the print until news CDs from the next print are added.

yep, and a damn nice toaster at that. Not only does it toast your bread but it will rotisery (sp?) you chicken and griddle your pancakes.
