IMHO, the toughest thing about digital is color control. It doesn't seem like a very big deal to capture a super high rez image with the kinds of computing muscle and storage we have now. Color control can still be a giant pain.

Our sign company made this custom billboard a year ago. Congress killed the Crusader project only a month after we finished the display. We had to go back and alter the billboard to take out the Crusader vehicle and just leave a state shape behind. That also meant getting new 3M Scotchprint graphics made for that portion of the board. It was PURE HELL making the color match (not to mention pure hell installing the graphics on site).

Our Scotchprint provider had the same file resources as last time (800MB CMYK TIFF and CDs containing parts of a giant multilayered PSD image). But certain "analog" features in the chain, such as humidity level, different toner carts, etc. made all the ICC and Colorsync profiles not mean squat. In the end, we had to adjust, compare, adjust, compare, etc.

I imagine it has to be even more difficult going through some of the similar profiling pains and then outputting via a laser film recorder. Kinda makes me shudder thinking about it. Deadlines have got to be pure evil in that equation.
