Quite true though... most of the French cinemas I've visited either have no masking at all, or simply a pair of vertical black battens (just sheets of plywood painted with blackboard paint, usually) used to form a sharp edge around the frame - in ratios smaller than 'scope you can still see the unused screen area on the other side of them.
