Registered: May 2007 posted 06-08-2007 01:05 AM                    Re Battlestar Galactica on DVD...the .1 LFE effects are recorded at a very low level and almost imperceptible at the regular settings. The sound on this DVD (the latest wide screen version with 1.1 DD) is generally bad. It has very scratchy sound in the centre channel. If you crank up the sub output from the processor, the "big" sound effects are very similar to those in Midway but with stuff-all dynamic range. On DVD there is also a bad WW2 movie called U571 about a captured U-boat with depth charges going off every other time you blink. Was this the unit for 70mm or for 35mm? I don't know much about which unit was used for which format and so on... I think Sens2 was the later version where they got LF information off the track rather than a generator like they used for "Earthquake". I remember the NBC "Earthquake" simulcast well-it was broadcast on WFLN in Philadelphia like the rest of NBC's simulcasts of the time since it was part of the NBC radio network. Does anybody know how the sound was distributed to the radio stations? Would "sync" have ever been a problem? You are right about the soundtrack album-I remember seeing it once in a store immediately when the film opened at the Branmar Cinema in Wilmington DE, but it soon was gone. It's probably worth noting that 1.1 was not a recognized channel allignment in the early days of Dolby Digital on DVD. Surely there must be some of them hanging around as there were a good number of them during the run. The rumble would be easy to sample being that I've got the LP with that track, but the unit would be invaluable to follow the print trigger tones and properly insert the sound at the right levels -- the print had trigger tones similar to Perspectasound system. They could get the rumble to respond at various levels at the appropriate time. I wonder if the current EARTHQUAKE screening is using that rumble unit. It would be interesting to see how close to the authentic system they are getting -- are they installing additional modern subbass speakers or did they really install some original fold horns and Cerwin-Vega speakers?  |  IP: Logged Paul Linfesty Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1383 From: Bakersfield, CA, USA Registered: Nov 1999 posted 07-02-2007 05:30 PM                     Frank, I went to the screening at the UCLA James Bridges Theatre Saturday night. According to the woman who spoke before the show, their authentic Sensurround unit came from Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco and she said it was one of two known units in existance. The subs were not the original units, however. There were no rear units, but they had a total of six units in front of screen (in stacks of two). No matter. They did a superb job of recreating the experience, though. A San Francisco East Bay company did the audio set-up for this presentation. It was the same one used for the UC Berkeley Pacific Film Archive showing. This is one beautiful theatre. Equipped for everything (including a THX certified sound system). Unfortunately, the print was opptical mono and didn't sound great, either (low hum and a bit scratchy). The quality of the image, however, was excellent. Assuming this was an original print, it had to have been dye-transfer. It was pretty sharp with strong colors. The only oddity to the presentation was that of the "warning" tag at the beginning. It was projected FLAT, at the end of the previews (Them!, The Omega Man, Volcano, Escape From L.A.) Also, the sound wasn't on and came up only on the last tag of the disclaimer (while the curtains closed). It was very reminenicent of the old days, however, that as soon as the curtains finishjed closing, the image SNAPPED instantly to scope (full scope, to boot and common height). Unfortunately, after the curtains opened, it took about 10 seconds for the screen mask to start opening. Other than that, a perfect visual presentation.
