Yep... certainly interesting. Different places at the same time. I must have been in the "uptight" part of the country... having to listen to those tapes, though, given my age now, I guess I have to admit to actually liking some of it...
As much as anything, I was impressed at the background music industry's talent for performing a song that sounded just enough like a commercial artist's version so that it was familiar, yet not close enough that you had to pay royalties on it.
In Frank's defense, he is correct about the production houses being finicky about quality. To the companies already listed, I'd add Drake-Chenault, the distributor of many of the formats aimed at the younger audiences of that time. One of their former engineers works in the Portland, Oregon market, and tells similar stories about excising clicks with grease pencils and splicing blocks. Much of the music that was dubbed to those automation reels came from the same records you or I might have bought back then... but the defects were not allowed to make it to the production copies.
Imagine what we could have done with Audition or Protools back then.
