Yup, WB seems to be on the ball with authoring. It shouldn't really come as a surprise since they were pretty much the pioneer of SD DVDs back in the day.

I finally saw Blade Runner again last night for the second time. The first time was when I rented some Criterion LaserDisc back in the 40s or whenever people actually thought LaserDisc was cool. Anyway I really like the movie and would like to add it to my collection, but therein lies the problem.

I have no clue which "version" I saw last night. I know there are about 40 or 50 different versions for some super-retarded reason. The version I saw (and liked) did not have any narration. It would definitely be worse if narration were present. I have no idea if the LaserDisc I rented way back when had narration. Who cares? That was 90 years ago! I want to buy Blade Runner on Blu-ray. There are two versions available and even www.blu-ray.com does not list the differences.

There is a cheap one which comes in normal, sane packaging. Is this one the version that I would like? Does it have the 7.1 sound and the final cut and all that crap? Then there is the $100 version which comes in some retarded suitcase and would never fit on anyone's shelf. Why do they package shit like this? I was so disappointed in the Close Encounters Blu-ray packaging because it doesn't come in a normal box, but instead some fold-out mess. Anyway this version would likely have the version that I enjoyed but I don't want to have to pay for it or attempt to find somewhere to store it.

Give me the answers. The fact that this movie even has so many different versions really crustifies my stool.

The 5-disc Bladerunner Collector's Edition Blu-ray has every version ever released, as well as a "work print" version. Five cuts of the movie. You can buy it for $30 at Wal-Mart or order online for perhaps a few dollars less. It comes in a normal looking Blu-ray case; the case is just thicker since it holds 3 BDs and 2 DVDs. All of the content is the same as the $100 super duper collectors package. It doesn't have the extra printed materials and bigger case.

The "Final Cut" version is on disc 1. It is the best version. There's no stupid narration (it's my opinion the narration is stupid and needless). The "Final Cut" version had the digital intermediate treatment. The audio is Dolby TrueHD 5.1.

The other cuts of the movie (on disc 3 and disc 5) had HD telecine transfers. They look decent but not nearly as great as the "Final Cut" version on disc 1.

Excellent! Thank you for the answer. Not sure why anyone would want to pay $70 more for some printed material and a special case, but whatever.

OK Bobby you lied to me. You said it was $30 at Wal*Mart. I went to Wal*Mart but it was only $29.99. Since I am not quite classified as white trash, it is against the law for me to buy anything at Wal*Mart. Besides, I decided I'd rather spend $29.99 at Target than at Wal*Mart (who wouldn't?), so I left and went to Target. But Target had it for $24.99! For once, being better than white trash netted me a lower price!

I skipped Best Buy because they charge rip-off prices for their BDs.

From Wednesday to Sunday I was in Rogers, Arkansas for the AMBUCS National Conference (AMBUCS is a civic club that helps children and adults with disabilities and raises money to provide scholarships to physical therapy students). Rogers, Arkansas is next to Bentonville, home of Wal-Mart corporate headquarters.

The Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores in that area of NW Arkansas are pretty damned nice. They actually have lighted pylon signs! I visited the brand new Rogers Wal-Mart Supercenter with a couple friends in search of certain University of Arkansas Razorback memorabilia for a joke (fake pig noses). We didn't find any. The Razorback store at Pinnacle Hills shopping center didn't have any either. If I had the time I would have toured the all-digital Malco theater at that glitzy "lifestyle center" mall. The Rogers Wal-Mart had a Blu-ray section more than double the size of any Wal-Mart here in Lawton. That store also now ranks as the only place I have ever seen the 80GB Playstation 3 Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle in stock.

I'm still tired from that convention. Lots of seminars. And lots of partying in the hospitality suite. I think the highlight was meeting Dan Keplinger, an artist who was the subject of an Oscar winning documentary, King Gimp. He's a pretty inspiring fellow with a good sense of humor (he's not afraid of making disabled jokes -and told a few in the hospitality suite).

Anyway, $24.99 at Target? That's a pretty good bargain for that 5-disc title. You might have been able to get it for under $20 from Amazon -if you wanted to wait. I paid $29.99 for my copy at Circuit City and still feel it was a bargain.

Now that you have the title, what do you think?

I love it, of course. The only difference in the Final Cut version that I noticed was that Roy Batty clearly says "Father" here, but he clearly said "Fucker" in the other version. I didn't notice any other changes, but I haven't seen the movie trillions of times so other changes may have gone unnoticed. The picture was great for the most part. No real complaints at all. The sound was also mostly great, save for the slight clipping distortion on a few of the ancient sound effects. Then again, I really do need a new receiver. Obviously this version was edited in Final Cut Pro, or they would have called it the Premiere Version or maybe the Windows Movie Maker Version.

I doubt I'll watch all of the other discs. I don't really care much about different versions of the film. I may watch the "Making of" nonsense. Who knows, curiosity may eventually get the best of me.
