A few things about Star Trek IV... at one time they were going to have Eddie Murphy as their comic relief. Murphy had already made some big hits with Paramount, after all, but he decided to do The Golden Child instead. Overall, I believe Star Trek IV would have been overwhelmed by "Murphyness" so I'm glad he didn't do it.
However, I have no idea what the script would have been like if they'd gone forward with that original plan. Meanwhile, the main "guest star" this time around was Catherine Hicks in what is, to me, a bad performance. (But can you blame her too much? They really gave her some lousy dialog and horrible moments like "the mime who's putting her hands against the invisible spaceship.") And it's no wonder she didn't give Shatner a real kiss in the movie. They had no chemistry.
But the worst element of the finished movie, to me, is the score. It's certainly the weakest of any Star Trek score, if you ask me.
While I cannot find many good things to say about the next Star Trek movie, at least it had an honest-to-goodness Jerry Goldsmith score.

STAR TREK: TMP
I watched this thing with a full-house in Nashville TN the weekend it was released. Remember, it had been around 10 years since the lovers of the original series had seen anything new to look at.
I'm not including the Filmation animated (?) series from the early '70's.
I think the reason for the long-long shots of the ship was to make the fans happy. It was fun to see the old tub again, in wide screen, and stereo sound. Robert Wise did a good job with the material he had. The story is a bit hokey, but, it's Star Trek! Mr Roddenberry wrote westerns, among other things, before this series. I personally like most of his work.
I've only seen the first 3 movies, and have never seen the directors cut of the first film.
I used to screen the Star Trek original series for a TV station I worked for, and liked getting to see them uncut (syndication versions) before we hacked a few minutes out of them. On a ten foot screen, they looked really nice, and it was fun seeing the way things were done then in regards to special effects. I never really got into to any of the other series, and especially disliked Deep Space Nine.
EDIT: I have the three movies, and some of the original series episodes on BETA. The copies sure look better than the VHS copies that survive.
