It's not only a possibility, it's part of the specs and it is being used. None of the first batch of UHD releases did use the AACS 2.0 Enhanced options, but I've got some HDR releases here that are most definitely require a working Internet connection in order to be "validated" on the player. The thing is, the industry itself isn't transparent in what kind of protection they use on their releases and it might also vary between regions or type of release...

It's now toast anyways as AACS 2.0 seems to have been cracked and practically all UHD/HDR releases are out there...

Microsoft has a great track record here, back in 2008 they shut down their MSN Music store and took the DRM servers with them, people had to switch to Zune... Now, last year, Microsoft switched off the Zune DRM servers...

I'd say content creators need to get their acts together, maybe they should be required, by law, to still provide copies of their content which we can actually OWN in order to be able to keep claiming copyright on them, or else they will pull a 1984 on us whenever they feel fit to do so.

I'm all for paying those who create content their fair share, but it's almost like those media moguls that create most of the content we consume, want people to become pirates...

Oppo is officially sold out of all Blu-ray players (and seemingly everything else).

Have a look at the Cambridge Audio CXUHD, essentially the same player.

My guess is that once parts are exhausted, it will be gone too. Denon has a 1080p Blu-ray player with many of the features of the Oppo but likely not the same robustness of the Oppo.

It will be interesting to see what happens to them, at least they're not officially EoS yet. The warehouse of one of the distributors we buy from currently has two of them in stock. I wonder if they will be restocked once it runs out.

I have given up on Denon. Their CD transports and players are made fomr the crappiest plastic they could possibly find. Once they get to be 5 or 6 years old, some of the plastic parts in the transports literally start to crumble. I just shit caned two high end denon units last week.

I first purchased the Oppo 981HD before the Blu-ray format and what a great player it has been, I still occasionally use it, then of course the Blu-ray format came about and I went thru 2 Samsung & 1 Sony Blu-ray players before I purchased the UDP-203, it was a bitter-sweet purchase since 2 weeks later Oppo announces they are out of the player business, great player but for how long and who can fix it, my guess all the smart people sold it and doubled their money on eBay, me I will just ride it out till the end.
