IMAX 3D laser is night-and-day better than standard 3D IMAX digital.
IMAX will be happy to charge you just as much either way. Some of the local here in Lawton are suffering from a bit of sticker shock at the ticket prices of the IMAX-branded screen at the new Carmike here. Evening price to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 3D: $17.50. The room is big (nearly 600 seats) and the screen is pretty big. But it's the same old HDTV resolution image and 5.0 audio.

A friend of mine asked me where would be the best place to see Star Wars in NYC. I told him Sony Lincoln Square should be getting IMAX Laser, but then I found this article.

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/3ppj5s/lincoln_square_imax_is_showing_star_wars_in/

There is a petition available in the link for people to sign requesting the film be shown in 70MM. If this is true, it's a shame one of the last true IMAX screens may not even show it in 15/70 or laser. That is just ridiculous!

IMAX is proceeding with laser projection upgrades at a very very slow pace. According to their web site only 9 systems been installed worldwide up to this point.

Meanwhile, Dolby Cinema setups aren't being installed in a pace anyone could call fast. However, there are now more Dolby Cinema systems running in the United States than IMAX with Laser. Dolby Cinema at least has a screen in Manhattan while IMAX with Laser does not. Given the extra bump of HDR via Dolby Vision that might actually be a better way to see the new Star Wars movie than going out of the way to see it in an upgraded IMAX Digital screen. The new Star Wars movie has been officially announced to feature a Dolby Atmos mix and Dolby Vision master.

One thing I'm wondering: how fast are theaters installing laser projectors without any Dolby or IMAX branding? If they install laser in any sort of configuration (single projector, dual, etc.) at a faster pace it could end up degrading any advertising punch Dolby or IMAX could have when introducing it to certain markets. "Laser? We have that already. I wasn't really all that impressed with it."

so do theater get a package deal (better pricing) through Dolby if they get a D-Vision system, than just getting a 4K Laser projector and Atmos system separately?

Well I will say that an advantage with IMAX is for the scenes that were shot in that format, and it takes more advantage of the screen. You don't get that with Dolby Vision. [Razz]

I just checked to see if IMAX had made any updates to its list of theaters featuring IMAX With Laser. I found this:

 -

It turns out IMAX just re-vamped their web site.

It looks like yet another canned template based web site. Pretty much the whole damned Internet is moving to this shit. Viewing the source code I expected to see notes about WordPress, but found references to Drupal 7 instead. That's another canned theme front end for web development. This is one of the consequences of killing off Flash and promoting a totally disorganized, cluster-fucked "HTML5" approach. You damned near have to be a computer scientist in order to hand code a modern web site from scratch. It's so much faster (and cheaper) to crank out some spreadsheet looking bullshit out of WordPress.

Anyway! Back to the topic. With this re-vamp IMAX has gotten even more vague than ever with information about its theaters. Their theaters map no longer has any mention if a specific theater is showing film or digital or the very rare laser process. It's as if they're all the same.

That page specifically about the new laser process is gone. And so is the list of equipped theaters.

Well they ARE all the same aren't they? Because they're Imax, doesn't that mean they are all equally spectacular?

So.... has anyone here seen the 15/70 prints of Star Wars yet? I'm curious as to how good they look. I've heard they are amazing.

Saw it on opening day in Sydney at the IMAX in 15/70. The Full screen IMAX scenes look great, if not a little nauseating (a specific chase scene is in full IMAX screen height and width), but I did think some of the scenes shot in 35mm looked rather poor, especially face close ups.

Also, it strains the neck when they do the opening story roll up the screen. You have to turn your head side to side to read the text. Sort of like watching a tennis match from the side.

Im sure the audience didn't mind, they cheered overtime an old character appeared. I think I have to go back and watch it again in a normal cinema so I can concentrate more on the story and not the gee whiz bang of the big screen.

I'm hoping to check out the 15/70mm show at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History in the next week or two. It's a dome screen though. Not sure what to expect with how the movie will be cropped for that kind of screen. Best case scenario would involve driving clear up to Branson. But I don't like Branson that much.

No, I didn't make it down to Fort Worth to see the 15/70mm show at the museum there. Based on some comments about the blow-up's image quality (nearly all of it reportedly from a 2K resolution digital intermediate) it didn't seem like it would be worth the trip.

I'm happy I was at least able to see The Hateful Eight in 70mm. Although it would have been nice to see the movie projected on a larger, not HDTV shaped, movie screen.
