Yay, another news article hyping digital cinema, containing inaccuracies! Digital cinema companies just can't seem to promote their products without lying about film at the same time. Ought to make you feel real good about paying 5 and 6 figure amounts for their stuff! It's worth mentioning that you can see the original dual-35mm 3-D system this coming week if you live in San Francisco. The Castro Theatre is having a festival of original dual-system 3-D films from October 3-9. Oh, and I have to say I really don't like silver screens. They reduce the smoothness of the image, show blemishes easily, and are impossible to light evenly. It was the Criterion, not the Rialto. But my point being that prints were run for much, MUCH longer in the golden age of the movie palaces and they seemed to resist the horrors that we see today after living in a single theatre for a few weeks. Today titles have much shorter legs than in the past and yet they still can't sustain decent, dirt-free presentation even in some of the "flagship" theatres in the largest markets. The idea that digital will fix this is absurd because the reason this situation exists is well known to all of us. It's a result of who it is that the exhibitor installs in the booth to handling the entire operation and with what technical expertise those people have or more accurately, don't have. Like automation which theatre owners used as an excuse to replace skilled, experienced operators with barely trained personnel, you can hear their brains once again thinking that digital will be a new way to allow them to eleminate even those A-Usher/operators from the booth. Won't they be in for a huge, costly surprise.
