Yes, the rules on VOCs have cut back many operations, but American Film and Tape is still "out here", in the L.A. area, but comfortably out of the major metropolitan area, up north near Magic Mountain in Valencia (possibly the air pollution rules are less strict in that area, since it is so far out of the city center). Actually, when I spoke with him most recently, about 8 months ago, I had an even more quixotic project in mind: re-doing some 35mm stuff in 4-track mag. He agreed that he could (given the right payment, and set-up time) also stripe that. Only problem was the special perforations of the film, which would have required a special order to get a batch of that kind of stock. That issue (perf problem) kind of put the wet blanket on the new 4-track prints discussion, because even a minimum special order would be a huge cost, and with such a very limited market, probably prohibitive. There was a time when Samuel Goldwyn had very nice Roadshow mag prints of OKLAHOMA and SOUTH PACIFIC. Only thing is, they were actually not 4trk, but 3trk (LCR). The kicker is that Goldwin evidently ran into the same problem as you discovered, i.e., Foxhole stock was not readily available. So they just did 3 stripes on standard, large sprockethole stock. You had to do some adjusting of levels, but otherwise it worked very well. There is an issue in long runs of this type of print that the larger perf will be running over a part of one of the heads, causing addition abrasive wear on it. We only played these two prints for five shows over one weekend, so it wasn't an issue.
