It's already clear what's evolving from it: fast, convenient and HDTV resolution. Film can produce higher quality results, but the process is slower and more difficult to handle in both production and post production.
Most new movies are still shot on film, but the post production process is all digital now. The end product once post production is finished is typically a HDTV resolution or slightly higher 2K resolution end product. Visual effects, effects compositing, color grading, motion graphics and titles are all completed in the digital domain, but often at that 1080p/2K area of resolution. If the movie is shot with video cameras chances are that footage will be shot in HDTV resolution, even if the camera system can support higher standards like 4K.
The bad thing about shooting and post producing a movie entirely in the digital domain is the limits of technology, budget and time constraints of that day will be permanently baked into the finished product. If you at least have an original camera negative from a film camera that at least offers some chance for things to be improved years or even decades later.
Resolution is not the only factor that makes it difficult for digital to beat film. Color depth is very important. 8-bits per color channel might be good enough for consumer video products like DVD and Blu-ray. It isn't so good for post production work. When you increase the bit depth in each color channel more can be done with color and contrast without chopping up the image's fidelity and getting nasty problems like banding and posterization. But it comes at a cost of significantly larger file sizes and data bandwidth needs.
Archiving the finished movie data raises other issues. Hard discs can fail. Optical discs can develop laser rot. Data tapes aren't exactly 100% reliable for long term storage either. "Tape sweat," drop-outs and wrinkles can destroy data. And the tape reader has to keep working. How many people can still use data tape formats from the early 1990s? If anyone has data they want to keep they have to dub it from one storage device to another and do so on a reoccurring basis.
Modern film negatives, if stored properly, can last for at least several decades.
