Some of the bugs and stuff that did not function were fixed with the first update. We don't have 3D, so there is little I can tell you about that. For the system itself: it is fairly straightforward, easy to use ... coming from someone that was not involved with 35mm projection and operated only video projectors in the past. The picture is very good, the only thing you need to be careful about are the lamps that need about 2-3 minutes to warm up. Before that they put out a peculiar greenish light. So far only 3D Option is Sony supplied polarization in a one-time-buy model, no RealD license. No Dolby 3D as for the 320. Why I don't know. I will have a meeting this coming wednesday with a cinema operator from nearby operating one 320 and three 515. They were not so lucky with their 515, one was DOA, one has control issues (douser closing feedback). They are still very happy with the picture. Ours is performing flawlessly since day one. Every now and then the server will not shutdown completely at the end of the day. We power it off then. The first software update from May only solved stability and TMS related issues, no visible functional improvements in the GUI. We are now 'officially' allowed to do all tasks simultaneously while show play (did it before, however, without issues). Next functional upgrade is said to be scheduled for july. I'm missing network control of our AP20, JNIOR, and better show programming interface (list view, backwards referenced cues, etc.). The web interface may seem a bit simplicated at first, but compared to the usual Doremi/Dolby server/DLP combo it packs everything into a single range of tabs, server AND projector control. I got to like it quickly. The timeline playlist editor is a pain in the ass for longer shows because it truncates item names to illegibility , hope they fix that soon, although it does have some benefits too compared to the list-only display of other servers. No 'seek-to' yet, but the Intermission setup offers a workaround. No back-referenced Cues. No user accessible file system maintenance tools. The server has lot's of GPIO, but so far lacks any raw-type of network or serial automation, only some very few CPs are supported. We get away nicely with 15GPOs so far for our needs, but I would like to see more automation capabilities. Ingest speed is very good over CRU and USB3.0. Lot's of DCP drives now come with USB3.0. There is also a new smaller CRU form factor now supporting CRU and USB3.0, the 'DCmini'. How do you do it? You seek to the position you want, then you just exit without setting an intermission. As this is available within the SPL editor, it's a quick sideway. (I'm comparing 515s and 320s) Note on the 320s you must use the actual screen or VNC into it. You can't use their SMS software for access to the offset.  |  IP: Logged Carsten Kurz Film God Posts: 4340 From: Cologne, NRW, Germany Registered: Aug 2009 posted 12-04-2013 05:25 AM                     Sony just confirmed that the SRX-R515P will have a 'smaller' (cheaper) brother early 2014 - the SRX-R510P. http://www.sony.de/pro/press/pr-sony-srx-r510p?SM=FB2&src=41213_post_SRX-R510P_ It will only have 4 lamps instead of 6, 9.000Lumen instead of 15.000, and a slightly reduced contrast (per spec). It is just a striped-down version of the 515 to gain some market share in the small screen segment, just like Barco did with their DP2k-10Sx->DP2k-8Sx. "The new 6-lamp system delivers the resilience you need so you never have to stop a show." I had read enough and I am still laughing! As for UHP lamps... Many of them are unproven however NEC used a well prooven UHP lamp system for the NC-900 that had been in use for their larger DLP board room projectors for a number of years. I have had great luck so far with them in 23 installs and measured one location last weekend that had just went past half life of 1500 hours. No color change and only 8% light ouput loss. It's nothing to do with redundancy at all... It's the six lamps I'm laughing about... Still)! In these projectors if you even loose one lamp you have to (at least very definately should) re-shoot the colors. No two UHP reflectors are the same. Honestly, I could care less how black the Sony can go. How many rooms are black enough to make use of it? Virtually none! With light scatter fomr the screen itself, aisle lighting and various exit signs and such as required by local codes there is no such thing as a black room. The black from your Sony is still gonna look gray.
