I can confirm that "deep color" will ABSOLUTELY cause random issues between a D-cinema projector.

And Joe is right, turn all of that HDMI fancy nonsense off.

Randy - tell us the exact type of BluRay Player, and we can talk you through all the necessary settings. Make sure you keep them afterwards. This is something you should set initially one time, then never touch again.

Not 100% sure of the model because I don't have it at hand. 90% sure that it's the Sony BDP-S590.

I am guessing that, whatever model it is, I want to turn color sampling to 4:2:2 because Blu-Ray movies are usually mastered at that level, anyway. 4:4:4 would be wasting horsepower.

Steve,

I agree that plugging the BD straight to the projector and creating a dedicated macro is the best solution.

But how do you address the RGB level issue? All D-Cinema projectors (except Sony 515) expect Full Range RGB (0-255) and almost all BD players output Video levels (16-235). You can correct this using a scaler but I am not aware of a procedure to do so on a D-Cinema projector.
Other than buying a BD player with Full Range capabilities what are the options?

It depends on the projector as to what tools they provide one to get it to look good. Christie, has several settings, for instance to get the range as well as the gamma dialed in. Barco would require setting up a PCF via their Post Prod. version of Communicator. Or, one can use the TI ICP program to dial things in. For most, however, it just doesn't seem to matter.

Please get back to us once you are sure. There is also a firmware update for this unit dating from dec 2012.

Marco - the Sony should output 0-255 levels when set to 444 RGB, and when set to YCbCr.

But direct connection to the projector seems to be no option if the GEFEN needs to be in the chain for audio decoding. I would first check all player settings, then update scaler and player firmware (maybe even projector).

I remember the Christies had issues when connected directly to a Sony Player at a time when they changed the EDID extended settings.

From the Christie 2220 manual:

'The method of color decoding for the current source. The default is YCbCr for all DVI sources. The default for all cinema sources is Unity RGB.'

True, the Sony 515 currently is the only DCI projector with all necessary options for alternative content. And also very easy to setup.

Can you chose the RGB range on a Christie? I remember trying a bit of everything with no luck. And I did not know the range could be set by the TI software. (nobody mentioned that on the thread I opened some time ago! [Smile] )

Carsten,
Are you sure about the SONY? I had direct confirmation from a SONY Japanese engineer that all their BD players are 16-235 only and my tests seemed to confirm that.

I'll check again.

Steve
When you say "for most" you mean projectors or customers?

Sorry, that should have been '...and 16-235 when set to YCbCr.'

Marco, I forgot that with the 515 now I have excellent tools to check it. Will get back about this. It's a bit annoying that the DLPs are so 'vague' there indeed.

Just checked in at the theater. It is a BDP-S590

I have already turned Deep Color to OFF.
I have set sampling to 4:2:2.

Have not checked firmware updates to the player or the Gefen.
Neither one of those have connection to the Internet. Will have to work on that.

How does one check the firmware version on the Gefen?
Can you hit a button on the front panel to make it read out on the display or does it have to be done through the network connection?

Will have my boss bring a Blu-Ray from home when he comes in, this afternoon, in order to test progress so far.

Carsten,

I am quite confident that is not the case for most of the available BD players. As said, I eventually got in touch with Sony and they confirmed that. But I'll check again. You've got aPM [Smile]

Steve,
If I did my job following what the customer would be happy with, I think I wouldn't bother upgrading those Gefen with swapped LFE/Centre channels! [Wink]

Randy,
press the MENU button and then the RIGHT button until you see the Firmware version.

Gefen FW = 3.25

I bet the firmware on the player needs an update but will have to wait until in can string a temporary cable over there in order to do it.

Does the BD player allow firmware updates by burning the new firmware onto a CD and sticking that in the machine? The Denon player in our booth has this function as a way round the problem of the machine being installed in a rack that doesn't have an Internet connection within convenient range. It's a pain in the bum, because you have to enter the serial number of the machine into Denon's website and jump through a number of verification hoops before you get your hands on the ISO (presumably this is to prevent you from trying to region hack the thing by installing another region's firmware), but it can be done.

Guess it's easier now to just bring the player near a plain vanilla internet router with DHCP temporarily.

Easier and safer I'd say, you don't risk to burn the wrong FW! Takes a few minutes.
