It was clear that Dolby and the gang would not just sit still and leave it at 7.1 LPCM, wasn't it?
Unfortunately, "innovation" (or progress or whatever you want to call it), in a free market economy primarily works by breaking standards or defacto standards. If everybody is doing the same thing, the only difference you can make is price. And a race to the bottom is not what you want if you're calling yourself Dolby.
From an engineering point of view, I would love it the other way around: First create a decent new standard, then bring in the products. But that's unfortunately not where the big bucks are.
I finally managed to play the trailer on a big screen and I actually liked it. I'm not sure if everybody really appreciates the non-stop spinning though. Manny refereed to old ladies getting all frightened by the somewhat bombastic "Dolby Spheres" trailer, this one might spin their head around.
And yeah, there will be many obvious complaints about the re-engineerded deep note, but I also kind of liked it. It sounded a little bit cleaner than the original incarnation.
