You don't just find JIS screws in Japanese stuff , many made-in-China stuff also uses them. Sony normaly at least uses screws that are properly labeled with those tiny dimples.

My trusty set of screwdriver bits also contains a few JIS ones. Usually, you don't strip out the head of a JIS screw with a normal Philips screwdriver, unless you encounter one of those dirt cheap ones that weren't properly hardened or massively over-fastened. You have to watch out if you're using powered tools though.
