some time before the movie opened, a projectionist who had screened it in some context was gushing about how explicit the sex scenes were, in fact, that he found it hard to believe that the actors weren't actually doing the deed. now, this is a gushy guy by nature, but i feel like either the print he saw might have had more action in it than the one i saw, or it was a showprint with a lot more detail in the darkness than ours.
and yes, we're showing the complete film as shipped to us (right, eric?) .

Funny, but I did not interpret the "flashback" scene towards the end of the film, as being a flashback at all. In the context of the scene, and its placement in it, I saw that clip as being older Jack's fantasy about what could have been had Ennis been more committed to, and unafraid of their relationship.
I realize it could be a flashback too, but I think I would have bought that more if we had seen a portion of that scene earlier in the film (hence the "flashback"). As it is, it seems ambiguous as to if it really happened, much in the same way as Ennis' "flash" when he is in the phone booth talking to Jack's wife. Even in the short story, it's more suggestive then explicit.
I have to say I did expect slightly more explicit scenes between the two leads, when I saw this the first time, simply because of all the hype. Seeing it a second and third time, none of that seemed to bother me. I think what they did was fine.
As far as extra deleted scenes, if you happened to watch the Golden Globes, last night, there was a glimpse of something like that among the clips shown of the film; a brief shot of a shirtless Ennis standing on what looked like a fallen tree, as he stared down into the river.
