I've never understood the hate myself. I don't get how being attracted to the same sex somehow "undermines traditional family values" or is a threat to the "sacred institution of marriage". Both face a monumental threat, to be sure: "quickie" marriages and the high divorce rate. But I guess that's not shocking enough for the televangelists.

I was almost brought to tears by the jail cell letter scene. With the hatred that spews forth from the political and religious extremists, sometimes I catch myself worrying that a situation like that might actually happen in real life.

I especially think it is curious for our state of Oklahoma to weigh in on things like gay marriage bans. Oklahoma doesn't even have its act together when it comes to traditional marriage.

This state constantly competes for the lead in the nation's divorce rate. We're usually #1 in the nation or just behind Nevada on marriage break ups. It would seem many of us should pay more attention to what needs to be improved in ourselves and less attention in the lives of others.

Back to the reviews:

I saw this film yesterday at the new Regal 14 in downtown Washington D.C.

Great flick. I enjoyed tremendously. 5 out of 5 stars.

Other than the $17 bucks I had to pay for parking - it was a nice theatre and a great movie.

Excellent film, of course. Kind of makes you wish Thomas Jefferson was still alive.

I'm sure the TV host knew exactly what he was doing by airing the parody skit. It really was a pivot point in the movie. It was the first time anyone laughed, aside from MR V. It started the change in mindset of the people.

I didn't really get the feeling that it was purely anti-american, just anti-government. America today is nowhere near a facists state, but don't think for two seconds that it wouldn't be very quickly. If you don't think it could happen then you need to see a shrink, fast. All it would take is a natural disater, another depression, anything that would get everyone riled up or panicky. There will be two types of people: Those who use violence to defend their lives, their families and their homes. There will also be criminal scum that will take the oppurtunity to rob everyone he comes across. The nat'l guard can't tell who is good and who is bad so in order to "protect" us they would disarm everyone. Sound like science fiction? Sounds like the New Orleans news in August 2005. If you forfeit any freedoms for any reason you will never get them back. The second rule of politics is those with power don't want to give up that power. I dont trust anyone, especially politicians.

One thing that this movie demonstrates is how easily a patriot can be spun into a terrorist by the media, and vise versa.

Having read the graphic novel several times it was easier to just think of the film as something completely different. Hugo Weaving's voice and movements are what I thought V would be like from the novel.

However the situation has been 'jazzed up' for the 21st Century and our supposed fears, to the detriment of the film. The novel sees the UK having disarmed and avoided destruction in a nuclear war only to be thrown into chaos by the fallout from Europe. The neo-fascist party gains control in a search for order. The nuclear stuff is dated but the biological alternative given doesn't have as much irony in it and doesn't give the audience enough unanswered questions.

The purpose of the laboratory/prison complex of the novel isn't as well defined, and V isn't painted out as some super-human which is the main failing of film over novel. I think the novel was trying to say that resistance isn't difficult or neccessarily from force, yet the film has a sort of messiah-like subtext similar to the Matrix films where V is a leader through his super powers.

Still a very enjoyable film, give it 4/5.
