The microphone was dangling at least a foot into the top of the image. Not just for a split second either. This turd is in scope so you couldn't frame it out if you wanted to. Half the audience was pointing at it: "Look, a microphone!". It kind of perfectly sums up why THE DEPARTED is inferior to INFERNAL AFFAIRS. It's needlessly complex. Too bad for Scorsese though. If his film career doesn't take off I guess he is short enough to be a jockey or something. Best I've seen in quite awhile. Great performances all around, making it very difficult to single out anyone. Nicholson is terrific, as usual. The little rat-face thing he did was great. I also enjoyed Mark Wahlberg's character. I have to disagree with Brad about Alec Baldwin. I thought he was quite good in the role, and his tendency to overact was actually toned down a bit. This was very much like his role in Glengarry Glen Ross, which was the best he's ever done. (But then, that was a Mamet script, and it was made for him.) Speaking of Mamet, I thought the screenplay was terrific, but that script just cried out to be by David Mamet. Adding his rhythmic dialog to that cast would have been fun. Scorsese/Mamet would be a great collaboration. The film was a bit too long and also a bit confusing at times. You really have to pay attention to everything that is going on to stay abreast of things. Wife was very confused by some of the twists near the end. Ending was great, and quite unexpected. While not in the same league as GOODFELLAS or RAGING BULL, this is a classic Scorsese package that is very entertaining. Glad to see it doing well. Could see a few Oscar nominations, but might have been released a bit too early. Possibilities for Wahlberg, DiCaprio and Damon. I'm a sucker for a good song in a trailer (why I want to now see "300") and that is the first reason I wanted to see this movie. So far I think the best treatment I've seen of that tune in an advertisement was in the trailer for the NIN concert video And All That Could Have Been. It wasn't all cut to ribbons and such like it was in the trailer for 300. One big problem is most movies have music in their trailers that is not featured in the movie itself, and is often derived from other movies. Sometimes I'll see a movie which seems to have a good trailer, but then the movie itself is a real piece of shit. Freejack had a pretty decent trailer and a heavy tune from Public Image Limited. Anthony Hopkins was also coming off the heels of his Oscar win for Silence of the Lambs. But man, Freejack was a real dog. Also beware of any movie that uses the phrase "featuring original songs by..." in its advertisements. If they're going out of their way to push the soundtrack then the movie itself may be crap. Now, in the case of The Departed much of the music featured in the movie trailer was actually used in the movie. But something about him in this movie, I dunno. I never thought it was a character in a story, just Jack Nicholson hamming it up. Looks like Perimeter Pointe 10 in Atlanta has improved it's presentation in their biggest auditorium(8). I enjoyed the movie. It wasn't in the same leaague as Goodfellas or Casino, but it is nice to see Scorsese just make a fun gangster movie after his recent oscar bait movies. Dave, what the hell was up with that silly "Sheen is leftist and so he can't act comment"?(no need to reply. you can update your original post with a comment if you want to avoid taking this thread off on a tangent). Mini Spoiler : I liked some of the events in the final 15 min. Not a good example of films that come out of Hong Kong. There is also "Infernal Affairs" 2 & 3 which I have not yet checked out. But I prefer Hong Kong films the most compared to the American versions for they have more style and the characters are more simple but at the same time have more emotion in them (in that Hong Kong kind of way). Also the prints are better quality too. And no I don't like John Woo films. I will be checking this one out but I will wait for the DVD unless I see it second run here at The Astor Theatre. Apart from "Taxi Driver" i'm no big fan of Martin Scorsese. "Goodfellas" is way too overrated and as for "Casino" ... i gave up after an hour or so .  |  IP: Logged
