This one was GOOD! Best I've seen in quite awhile. Great performances all around, making it very difficult to single out anyone. Nicholson is terrific, as usual. The little rat-face thing he did was great. I also enjoyed Mark Wahlberg's character.
I have to disagree with Brad about Alec Baldwin. I thought he was quite good in the role, and his tendency to overact was actually toned down a bit. This was very much like his role in Glengarry Glen Ross, which was the best he's ever done. (But then, that was a Mamet script, and it was made for him.)
Speaking of Mamet, I thought the screenplay was terrific, but that script just cried out to be by David Mamet. Adding his rhythmic dialog to that cast would have been fun. Scorsese/Mamet would be a great collaboration.
The film was a bit too long and also a bit confusing at times. You really have to pay attention to everything that is going on to stay abreast of things. Wife was very confused by some of the twists near the end.
Ending was great, and quite unexpected.
While not in the same league as GOODFELLAS or RAGING BULL, this is a classic Scorsese package that is very entertaining. Glad to see it doing well.
Could see a few Oscar nominations, but might have been released a bit too early. Possibilities for Wahlberg, DiCaprio and Damon.
Rating 3.25 out of 4, with .75 deducted for some lack of clarity and over-length.
