I think some memories are a little fuzzy. In many locations, such as here in Northern New Jersey, Union Projectionists were paid a flat rate for a 5 hours shift, with an hourly overtime rate kicking in after 5 hours. $78 would not have been out of line for a full shift in major theatres in major markets back in the late 1970's and early 1980's, but that is only $15.60 an hour. It depressed me. I developed a lot of skills as a film handler, but now I'm seen as a boob with a splicer. So it is a low wage, but it does cover expenses if budgeted properly. On a different note, however, even with its low wages projection is more therapy for me than just a regular old part time job. It is an escape from wife, kids, papers that need graded, and anything else one doesn't need - or want - to face at that given moment. Just you and the machines. After a rough day in the real world, that 6:00 start time is peace.  |  IP: Logged Frank Angel Film God Posts: 5305 From: Brooklyn NY USA Registered: Dec 1999 posted 03-08-2008 01:58 PM                        Talking about nomenclature....at an SMPTE Projection Practices meeting, AMC theatre guys were there pushing the three-sprocket pulldown format so a full feature could fit on a 6000ft reel (needing even less skilled, lower-paid booth monkeys cause they wouldn't even need to know how to splice). At the meeting the guys around the table kept referring to the "projectionist" and how this format would be handled in the booth. This seemed to make the AMC guys visibly uneasy, and after the word "projectionist" was mentioned two or three times, one of them corrected us and said, "We no longer call them projectionists....they are "projection attendants." I remember looking over at John Pytlak and he had that wry smile of his; you could tell he was laughing inside. And I was thinking, "I bet you do, you over-paid suits." Then, still being very deferrental as was his way, John said quietly, "We'll make a note of that."  |  IP: Logged Danial Simmonds Expert Film Handler Posts: 107 From: Kota Damansara, Selangor, Malaysia Registered: Jan 2008 posted 03-10-2008 08:01 AM                        In my opinion when the digital revolution is completed the only people left working up the projection booth would be those who knows how to use a computer and networking incase there happens to be such a problem with the ip or anything else... Well in Malaysia the average Joe in the projection room should earn between RM 1200.00 to RM 1800.00 unless they become the Head Projectionist that should earn them up to RM 2000.00 . They have to work like 10 hours a day for 6 days a week.
