I read two newspapers a day, The Boston Herald, and The Salem News. If I am going to see a movie I either call the theatre or look it up online as I know the newspaper can often be wrong. I hate Fandango and would never use it. I dont like any automated system where you have to talk to a computer.

One of my theaters called me at 10:30am yesterday to have me add extra shows of "Horton Hears a Who" to the web site for Sun-Thu.

How is a newspaper going to be able to have that kind of flexibility? By the time the paper would have gotten the information and printed it, it would be Tuesday before their readers would see the updated information.

I readily admit that there is a particular demographic that depends on the newspaper as their primary source of information, but that demographic has to be shrinking steadily. The subscription numbers for newspapers continue to decline, and the traditional age barriers to getting online are becoming less and less of a factor.

Phone recordings and web sites are able to be changed on short notice, and I'll bet that the cost per sale is much cheaper on both than on newspaper advertising. In an industry where every penny seems to count, I fail to understand how the high cost of newspaper advertising makes sense. Those who can't/won't go online would certainly be able to pick up the phone, don't you think?

At the very least, I would think that aggressively re-negotiating the ad rates on a regular basis would be in order...
