You can also have your films delivered to an alternate location if you want. I have our films shipped to (and picked up from) my day job. Just call your Deluxe person and have them put the address you want into their database. This works with Technicolor too. We haven't had a film picked up from the actual theatre in at least 20 years.

I just received the letter from Technicolor today.
So here in Indiana UPS is taking it over as well.

We'll see what happens. I sure hope they retain the 2-hour window and key thing.

DHL is cutting 9,500 jobs from their US market and closing all Express Service Centers after losing over $200 Million. They had announced 4,500 job cuts, but they are bring it up to 9,500. The Express unit of the company in the US has 18,000 workers.

Technicolor Cinema Distribution sent a fax out on 11/27/2008 on service.

Transition Dates to Remember - The last day DHL will be making 35mm deliveries for Techicolor is Thursday December 4th. The last day DHL will be making 35mm pickups is Friday, November 28th. UPS will start making deliveries on Friday, December 5th. and begin making pickups on Monday, December 1st.

There is more stuff about UPS rep making a visit to learn more about your location. Technicolor has created training information regarding 35mm film shipments for the drivers.

Delivery and pickup windows - UPS is working to determine target delivery and pickup times for your theatre based on your past delivery history. These will be your new window times. We expect to have your target delivery and pickup times for your theatre by early next week. We will communicate them to you as soon as we receive them from UPS There will be less flexibility with UPS delivery windows then you experienced with DHL. If for some reason you cannot have someone at your theatre during this window on delivery or pickup days, we have two options.

1. First, your account can set up to have a care-of location; your prints would be delivered to an appoved neighboring business willing to accept delivery and pickups of your prints during your window.

2. As a second option, your account can be set up to deliver to the UPS Service Center in your area. If you select this option, you would be required to pickup and drop off your prints at the center.

This was just afew things in that fax. The rest talks about billing for 35mm shipments with UPS.

I recently got a phone call from UPS. They set up everything with me over the phone.

At this point, I know how they think they'll serve my place. If my films show up on the same truck they bring my posters (and everything else) in, there shouldn't be any problem.

Never received said fax.
But did like Jack, set it up all over the phone after a fellow called me.

He tried his best to avoid the key method, but simply does not work in our world. So, they are setup just like DHL.

Next day the driver ask about it. She already knew something was happening and that she was to pickup a key. She had not received any training...except what I gave her.

She had not been informed of pickup or drop off times/days. What the film can's looked like, nothing as yet. This was yesterday (Monday).

Our UPS driver informed us that there would be a $16.50 surcharge for "NON BOXED ITEM" shipments. The film cans are not in a box so they will charge extra for NOT putting them on the conveyors. I assume that damaged or sharp cans could tear the belts.

Perhaps now all shipments will come in the "Fox Boxes"!

UPS has long had a policy of charging an "additional handling" fee for items not in cardboard boxes. For years, I have been buying 16x16 boxes from W. W. Grainger (item #3W206) and whenever we have a two-can shipment, I put both cans in one box for shipping. It is much cheaper (on UPS) to send them that way than separately, and it has the added advantage of keeping the two cans together.

Another thing happening lately: I have noticed Deluxe shipments from Denver coming in with the weight grossly overestimated on the labels. A one-box shipment with a label reading 60 pounds actually weighed 43 pounds. UPS will adjust your billing upwards if you under-state the weight of a package, but they WILL NOT lower your billing if you over-state the weight. I suggest everyone should keep a close eye on this and complain to DFS if the weights aren't more accurate.

We got a phone call from UPS a couple weeks ago.
They asked when we are around to have films delivered.
We told them we open every day at 3:30pm.
They said, "OK. Your window will be 3-5pm"
I thought this will work out great since UPS refuses to do the key thing.
But now I just got a letter saying my window is 1-4pm!???

If they are going to assign whatever window they want, then why did they bother calling and acting all nice!?

Luckily we are in good with the regular UPS driver, so I'm confident she at least will delivery after 3:30pm - she does that now. But when she's on vacation we could have issues.

Tony, they are doing the "key thing" for us and two other theatres that I know of.

That's very interesting Brad.
The letter specifically said they will NOT do keys.

Thanks for letting us know.

Those mass produced letters ALWAYS have wiggle room even if they don't say they will.

Technicolor said "All prints must now be picked up and delivered at the theatre." When they called me, I said that won't work. I was ready for a fight, but they were accommodating. So our prints are still picked up and delivered at my day job where they always have been. Granted - in this small town it's a lot easier thing to pull off in a large city where you might have more than one driver serving your location.

I am worried about when our regular driver goes on vacation, too. I currently have a stack of their little sticky notes that say I am releasing delivery that I signed and my guy carries in his truck. He just grabs one whenever someone isn't here and it requires a signature.
