I am amazed by some of the posts in this thread.
We have here a film which is demonstrably not very good (Rotten Tomatoes gives it 30% positive, which is pathetic), is opening very wide, and is thus likely to have only one big weekend, during which 90%+ of the ticket gross goes to its distributor.
And people are saying that this is somehow a good thing for the exhibition industry when it does, in fact, represent all that is wrong with this industry today.
I'm all in favor of getting people to go to more movies, but would prefer that this happen because the films are actually good and have enough "legs" that the exhibitors can benefit from them over the long term, and not because lame films are being oversold by the press, but will eventually disappoint the patrons (who may then think twice before going to see another movie).
I'm glad that some people here are making money with this film, but releases like this do not represent a healthy industry. Wouldn't we all be better off with more films like "Wall-E," or the "Lord of the Rings" series, which appeal to adults as well, and which can sell tickets for months instead of days?
[disclaimer: I have not seen either Twilight film, nor do I have any interest in doing so, but I have yet to hear anything positive about them from anyone who is over the age of eighteen]
