Also keep in mind most theatre staff is going to be teenagers. Even if they are brave enough to go tell someone their age or older to knock it off, they are going to get zero respect, unless they are the size of NFL linebackers.

I guess it depends on the design of the theater, but in most theaters I've been in, there is a side hallway leading to the front third of the auditorium, with stairs leading up the stadium seating right there. A worker with the bare minimum of ability in moving their body should be able to move through the auditorium without causing a disruption (walking between patrons and the screen would be very distracting, I agree).

Cell phone screens should be visible from the port window, and an infrared camera in the upper back corner of the auditorium would provide a pretty good view that would be illuminated by a cell phone screen quite easily.

A certain amount of distraction by others needs to be tolerated. That's the trade-off of going to a public place. But someone that is causing a disruption to a greater degree should be dealt with, IMHO. If theaters can't figure out how to do this, they shouldn't be surprised when attendance falls. It's just part of the service they are providing. The average patron doesn't necessarily care about their staffing challenges.

Rave has a strict policy with phones. We have a warning sign in the lobby about cameras and recording (yes, many of them can take pictures)devices. The ticket taker reminds the patrons to turn off their phones in the theatres. There is a sign as you walk in the theatre. The pre-show ads have slides on cellphones and before the first trailer hits the screen there is a last reminder for 15-30 seconds on the screen. If an usher goes in (from a another patron complaint) and catches the person on the phone they are ejected, no questions and no refunds.

Bravo for Rave Theatres!!! I wish Regal and AMC would adopt similar policies. Cell phones are the number ONE reason I've stopped going to movies.

What I find annoying is right before the movie starts I'll dim and raise the lights slightly to indicate to the phone users that it's time to "PUT YER FUCKIN PHONE AWAY", but none of them do. Even some stray people standing around talking won't budge until its pitch dark so they can't find their seat.

As a customer I have been annoyed several times by these annoying screens and I have sat next to some teeny bopper who tried to have a conversation right in the middle of the movie.

I say we give permission for any patron to punch another patron in the face if a cell phone distracts them.

The problem is most customers don't assume that texting is regarded as "phone use".

They assume that as long as they are "not talking" on the phone they are ok and it doesn't count.

I have previously personally told people off for both texting using a phone and actually sitting in a theatre playing music using a phone. In both those occasions the customers thought they were ok because they weren’t "using a phone" i.e making a call.
