The angry employees gathered in front of the Bonita Springs movie theater to demand their pay.
After only seven weeks in business, Prado Cinema Cafe closed its doors in October 2010 and sent employees away with bags of concession stand candy but no final paychecks.
"It just all happened so fast," Assistant Manager Joe Lopez said later. "At the end of the day, we just all got screwed."
From inside the theater, Jim Record said he was just the manager and instead pointed the blame at the owner, Atlanta businessman James Duffy.
In Martin County, Fred Tomeo still holds a nearly decade-old worthless paycheck for his work in 2002 as manager at another failed Duffy company theater, the Regency Square 8 in Stuart, which closed in less than a year.
"He's a piece of dirt for doing what he did to employees," Tomeo said of Duffy.
William Parr, a projectionist at a Duffy company theater in Austin, Texas, said his paycheck bounced five times before the theater there closed nearly a decade ago. Parr said his manager had to pay staff by skimming payroll from ticket and concession sales.
Yet it's not just former employees who complain about not being paid by Duffy.
A six-month Scripps Howard News Service/Naples Daily News investigation after the Bonita Springs theater closed found that Duffy or his companies have been sued at least 69 times and been ordered to pay at least $24.6 million in judgments since 1982 for refusing to pay all kinds of bills.
Once the proprietor of a successful franchise business, Duffy's enterprise devolved over decades into one that has left a trail of unpaid bills, failed theaters and fraud allegations across the country.
The investigation linked Duffy to 88 theaters in Florida, Georgia, Ohio, California, North Carolina and 21 other states through an analysis of media reports, court records, company filings and interviews. Fifty-eight of those theaters either never opened or were open less than three years.

Also found out that the Exchange cinemas in Glendale,CA cinemas is now with Vintage Theatres. That leaves Mann with only two locations left.

It was an anticlimactic send-off for an old friend.
About 20 people had RSVP'ed to Jill Canfield of AZDIMS (the Arizona Drive-in Movie Society) to say goodbye to the Scottsdale 6 Drive-In last Friday and protest its closing as the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian community weighs options for the 29-acre property on the southeast corner of McKellips and Hayden roads.
But only five showed up.
With the sun setting over movie screens that went dark a month ago, couples Eva Poole and Scott Bradford of Mesa, Jill and Jesse Canfield of east Phoenix, and drive-in enthusiast Barney Kahn of Scottsdale all lamented the loss of the Scottsdale 6 which opened on Feb. 7, 1977. Despite large crowds coming to the Scottsdale 6 in recent months, the ownership (California-based West Wind Drive-ins) decided to close the drive-in after it was unable to renegotiate a new lease with the SRPM Indian community.
The last films there included "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "Our Idiot Brother" and "The Smurfs."
The few fans who came to say goodbye parked in a lot across the street from the Scottsdale 6, leaned against the backs of their vehicles, and looked wistfully at the dark screens.
"We should be unfolding our chairs and watching a movie there right now," Poole said. "We really need to let people know it's important to attend drive-ins so they don't completely disappear."
Decades ago, there were 14 drive-ins in Maricopa County. Today, there are only two remaining in the state, the Glendale 9 and the Apache Drive-in in Globe. As major film distributors increasingly transition from film to digital within the next two years, the existence of more mom-and-pop drive-ins and theaters will be threatened - and a romantic way of how we watch the movies could be lost.
