NATO and Fithian respond only to the maximum dues. Hence, unless you have 1000+ screens, you can forget it.

NATO has always said they can't and don't get involved with booking issues.

NATO is no more/no less than a lobbyist for cinema owners and one of their missions is to look after their interests vs. studios. They take the position of their most powerful members.

What's the point of even joining if you're not one of those upper-echelon members?

Discounts at the shows and events, for one. And there are local NATOs that do indeed "fight" for the local cinemas. I know that the Mid Atlantic NATO is very active on any potential legislation in the Mid-Atlantic area that could negatively impact cinemas. Those are just the obvious person like my system can see from the outside...you'd have to ask a participating member as to what the full benefits are.

Carmike is the by-far dominant chain in Montana, and for many years they weren't a member of NATO. During most of that time there were no other chains active in the state - Carmike had about half the screens and independents had the rest, and most of them are single-venue owners with one to three screens. Even so, NATO has been very helpful with keeping an eye on state legislation and even a few local issues that have cropped up, they've rallied the troops and sent people in to help. And, they always send at least one person (usually Belinda Judson, but often John Fithian comes too) to our regional convention, even though a lot of the area exhibitors can't be bothered to attend it.

They have an awesome credit card processing deal which by itself makes the cost of membership worth it.
