Earlier in this thread someone mentioned the GCC trailer that looked like a projector running. I remember this one very well. When GCC used to be here in town they were still using it when they closed in the mid 80's. I remember thast you could hear the dirt on the soundtrack because the music was so simple. The first Cinemark trailer I saw was the one where FRJ pulls up in front of the theater in an old car. They were long but fun to watch. Was always a good time to run to the concession stand because you could make it back before the feature started. I wish they would bring him back. The coolest thing I remember seeing was some of the countdown intermision trailers that drive-ins used to use. I wish I had some of those. I also remember an old snipe trailer from a Family owned company I used to work for Mid States Theaters. It was the one that said the concession stand remains open until the last fram of film runs thru the projector.

The Regal thing that Sean is referring to sounds like the dreaded "Pepsi Girl" trailer that everyone hates and which is apparently going to be replaced soon. They didn't even shoot it on film, and it always looks horrible on screen (I'm assuming that it was shot on HDTV or something like that).

Regarding drive-in stuff: somewhere I have a beat-up thing that says something about "concession stand closes in 15 minutes." When would this have been used? Would it have been spliced randomly in the middle of a feature? Would it be run at a reel change? Would it be run on the second projector and be superimposed on the screen with the movie? The drive-ins that I've seen usually have a microphone in the booth, with which they can announce "concession stand closing - half price on [insert whatever they made too much of here]"... Inquiring minds want to know.

Scott, if it was black with just the lettering, it was run on the second projector. I'd forgotton about these.
They usually incited a horn blast from at least one idiot, and it was simpler to make an announcement. Too bad we didn't have a little drive-in logo we could run in the lower right corner of the screen.

If the snipe had artwork on it, it was run as the next to last thing on the (weekday) clock or after the intermission short/cartoon. This may have been handled differently at different drive-ins.

I still would love video files of some of these things. The PIC snipe used to crack me up. We had a few house cartoons that were run to death. The point of the cartoons and short subjects was to bore the regular customers out of the cars and to the concession.

I was recently talking with another projectionist and we touched one memory and both suddenly went into an imitation kazoo rendition of "Ta-da-ta-taa-taa-Dah-dah-dah" from Bugs Bunny's "Knights Must Fall," which was our favorite. I think I'll start a new thread - fav. 7.5 min cartoon, cause there was one cartoon that was even better.

I remember something like the concession closes in 15 minutes would be ran before the thierd feature would start on weekends. I remember seing somekind of a intermision thing that featured a husband and wife and a baby. The wife would drop some eggs on the floor and they would bounce back up instead of breaking. The baby would drop to the floor and bounce back up and the father would catch it. That's about all I can remember. It could have been an advertisement for carpet or something but I don't remember.

Regal Cinemas will give Pepsi cowgirl the boot

Saturday, February 24, 2001
-------------------------------
By Shawn Levy of The Oregonian staff

In a few weeks, Regal Cinemas audiences won't have that little Pepsi girl to kick around any longer.

For more than a year, Portland-area moviegoers have been vocal in their loathing for the short film that Regal has played before movies to remind folks to turn off cell phones and beepers, to refrain from chatter and smoking -- and to drink Pepsi.

Shot in the Old West style of the Oscar-winning movie "Unforgiven," the spot features young moppet Hallie Kate Eisenberg and the voice of actor Jack Palance.

From the routine booing -- and the occasional tossing of empty Pepsi cups at movie screens -- it was clear to Regal officials that customers wanted the Pepsi girl run out of Dodge.

According to Dick Westerling, senior vice president of marketing and advertising for Regal, the Pepsi girl will vanish in three to four weeks or "maybe sooner." Her replacement will be an updated version of Regal's previous trailer, a digitally animated roller-coaster ride.

Asked if Portlanders had been influential in the company's decision, Westerling said, "I think Portland has been more vocal than other markets in their comments."

So call off the posse and holster those six-shooters: The guys in the white hats have won.

So does anyone here think they might be able to rescue a pepsi girl print for me? I haven't seen it enough times to outright hate it yet

Well YEAH -- count me in on the "Save the Pepsi Girl" band-wagon...

I don't care how stupid a policy trailer is, I'll watch it a bajillion times. Actually... the stupider the better, that way people can all cringe when they wonder "PEOPLE ACTUALLY RAN THIS?!?!"

OK I know someone who is good friends with a Regal Cinema manager in Austin. I will see what I can do to capture a few of these.

Scott, I have gotten the GCC Candy Band trailer off my ring and cored it. I will be mailing it out later on today. I will be sending it via a trackable method. when I have a tracking number I will e mail you with it.

Bringing it back for an update:

UA has a new version of the Odyssey policy snipe. The "Blade Runner" woman is replaced by a generic "Welcome to UA Theatres" sign. Also a slightly different version of the score.

I saw the new version of Odyssey on 6/30 at UA Union Square (NYC) leading into The Anniversary Party. The soundtrack was unbelievably LOUD! Was it because the booth staff didn't thread the digital reader?

It's actually the "Blade Runner" policy that was updated...not the Odyssey. The soundtrack is analog only.

Odeon here in the Uk, have a nice new tag (first seen on Evolution) reminding the audience to switch mobile phones off. It runs directly after an add for the companies web site. The tag starts with a back screen then the sound of a musical phone ringing in the rear-right surround. Then a phone rings in one of the front channels while a message appears asking the audience to swich phones off. In the 3 performances i have seen with it, it got laughs from the audience.

Nice idea to use a phone ringing in the surround channels to "cell" the idea that cellular/mobile phones are an annoying interruption. Would be to have a simulated "coming attraction" trailer where the actors stop in the middle of a line when the cell phone rings in back, and berate the phantom audience member for being so rude, and then resume the scene. Would not only be a humorous way to remind people of common courtesy, but also would show off good digital surround sound.

A company in the UK offers an effective way to silence those dreaded mobile phones, whose unwanted ring tones can ruin a visit to the cinema. The C-Guard Cellular Firewall is a jammer device confined to an auditorium, and does not interfere with any communications other than cellular within the quiet zone and does not interfere with cellular communications outside the regulated area.

Anyone know of any installations ?

Does anybody remember the crying babies trailer that AMC ran? I have always thought they were pretty amusing when I worked for AMC. It was pretty short and animated. It showed a crying baby then was quickly yanked from the frame with title stating to take crying babies to the lobby.

Does anybody know if AMC still uses this trailer or something similar?

Bernard:

It's illegal to jam cellular telephone (& other radio transmissions) in the U.S.

Believe me, desperate performance halls in the U.S. have been all over this.

I say to arm the audience with BB guns & let them fire at will when someone's phone rings.
