What's the timeline? Do DS9, TNG and Voyager all take place at the same time? I remember that the Enterprise-D was the first to encounter the Borg thanks to John D. Lancie (Q), but in Voyager they talked about how Seven of Nine's parents were the first to discover them, and how they didn't even know what the Borg actually looked like yet. Seven was 6 years old at the time. But if that was true, then why didn't the Enterprise-D know about the Borg at their first encounter. Therefore, Voyager MUST take place about 20 years in the future from TNG.

The crossover episodes (including Next Generation characters on Voyager) indicate that the three series overlapped each other in terms of the time setting.

The current "brains" behind Star Trek are playing quite loosely with the "facts" they establish. I know that when the new series starts chopping away at things which were established in the original series then the die-hard fans will set phasers for kill.

The whole concept of a "prequel" is... difficult to pull off. At least George Lucas already had a back story in mind before he made his first Star Wars movie but when you're making everything up as you go, a prequel is something you shouldn't do... Mr. Berman.

Ok...I've now seen it. I was/am a TOS person so I looked forward (or backward for that matter) to a prequil to TOS...but I think they have already blown it. I can't stand when technology radically is inconsistant.

This ENTERPISE is more technically evolved than Kirk's Enterprise except where the writers say they arn't...for example, this series doesn't get transporters but the ship looks MUCH MUCH more high-tech inside and out.

Then there are the little non-techno things that bother me...why the rankings in "pips" rather than the old-fashioned stripes like Kirk's crew used...heck even in the ST movies they didn't use pips but insignia...with the ST movies, one could see the transistion between the generations...this ENTERPRISE looks like TNG without the luxuary features of transporters and holodecks...that is TNG on the sticks!

Or even phrases...Kirk had "landing party" more appropriate for ENTERPRISE where they have "land" to move about vs Picard's "Away Team".

The only thing I like thus far is that the weapons are not going to get them out of trouble that well.

But... Steve!

Imagine if on some distant world where they didn't have movies (only TV) and they had a show called "Projector Trek". In it you would have projectionists running platter systems. The booths would all have chipped concrete floors and no ceiling since the exhibition industry is trying to pinch as many pennies as humanly possible. The staff would be all screwed up and only the cheapest components would be used. Then they would come out with a show called "Projector Trek: The Next Generation" where everything would be digital cinema, there would be couches and lounges in the booth, along with a bar and Whoopi Goldberg. There would not be one straight line or 90 degree angle anywhere, everything would be rounded and curved. Also, everyone would be politically correct. Then after that they came out with a series called "Projectorprise" that takes place a thousand years before the original "Projector Trek". In this show they are running movies with changeovers! As you know, changeovers are far more technically advanced than platters. They also provide a far better presentation than platters could ever dream of achieving in every single case no matter what. The booths would look nice and have refridgerators and TVs for the projectionists and people treated them like God.

This show has the same inconsistencies as Enterprise does.

Steve,

I'm a big one for picking on the inconsistancies (sp?), too. Correct me if I'm wrong, but at the time of The Cage, phasers were not invented yet. Aren't Enterprise's "phase pistols" just phasers with a longer name?

I wondered the same thing about the rank insignia. In fact, the uniforms have always been one of my biggest pet peeves about Trek. At least they are being consistent with one thing: gold is for command and red is for engineering.

I'm not sure what your point is about the landing party vs. away team. Did they actualy use the term "away team"? I don't remember.

I do agreet with the point about the ship looking technologicaly more advanced in every way. But (and I think I've said this before), I think that's just due to the limitations of television technology and the budget they had in the 60's. Think about it: would you really want a show produced in the 21's century to have a ship as 60's-looking as Kirk's? I think you just have to kinda use your imagination on that one.

Here's a major Trek timeline problem: correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't it been established that the first sharship was Daedalus class? (The one with the huge shere as it's primary hull instead of a saucer.)

I have to say that my favorite Trek is TNG. In my opinion, Picard is the best Capt. of the lot. Also, ST: First Contact was a great movie.

I think you're thinking of the Twilight Zone instead of Trek

BTW, are those little portable devices with the bright blue screens (on Enterprise) tricorders or PADD's?

Joe, that was one of the funniest things I've read in a long time. Good writing!

Chipped concrete! Oh the shame! One question... in "Projectorprise", who has the role of a Jar Jar character?

Um, I think you're thinking of Projector Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Operators, not Projectorprise.

I say, I say....boy....I do believe Joe be making a funny at my expense! Some of the flaws in your theory, as rewite it , include that everything should work well in projectorprise...in the Case of Enterprise, things don't work better than on TOS and in fact a bit worse...

Now as to other's question...yes in the second episode of Enterprise they used the "away team" term when visiting the ship.

The Cage did have both hand phasers and the phaser cannon that used the "ships power". If you recall, a hand phaser was used to escape from the cage. Setting the phaser was something to the effect of focusing a lens on a camera..you turned the splined dial on the barrel of the phaser.

To some degree I can understand trying to take into account that communicators are larger than cell phones but then again, the communicator was "mil-spec" There are some things that just don't make sense though...like the rank designation...we currently have Navy personel that have rank shown via stripes and in Kirks day we still did (who would have thought that the Commodor would be obsoleted though)...in Enterprise we have the pips.

This reminds me of Back to the Future where we go back on an alternate time line (ie we really are going back based on TNG's time line not TOS).

To some degree the show could have been made less costly if they tried to make the ship a bit more crude...again something that could evolve into the TOS Enterprise. One could see the progression from the TOS series to the TOS movie then to TNG series Enterprise...this one seems way out of place.

I thought I had remembered correctly. The entry for Laser Weapons in the Technology section of the Library section of the Startrek.com website reads:

Defensive directed-energy technology -- an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation -- used within sidearms by the Federation before the advent of the phaser. By the 2250s, hand-held sidearms as well as a large laser cannon for planetary use were employed.

So the weapons in The Cage were not phasers. Another inconsistency.

It certainly appears that T'Pal does not get along very well with humans. In fact, it seems that most Vulcans consider themselves better than humans and do not like humans. So why were Kirk and Spock best friends? Sure, Spock found many of the things that make us human illogical, but he didn't have a cold attitude and personality like T'Pal does.

Random thoughts in regards to Steve's comment about the term "away team," which reads: "yes in the second episode of Enterprise they used the "away team" term when visiting the ship." Perhaps that's because they went to a ship. I have noticed several times when landing on a planet they used the term "landing party." Perhaps the term originates from actualy landing a shuttle pod, and only applies in that case. Perhaps it was later carried on to refer to any expedition to a planet (or similar body), even though they used the transporters in TOS. My guess, "landing party" = mission to planet, "away team" = misson to another ship.

I don't think "away team" was ever used in TOS, but does anyone recal if they did use the term "landing party" to refer to missons to other ships or stations, or did they not specify? If nothing was ever used in that case, and "landing party" was just used for planetary missons, then perhaps we do not have an inconsistency.

well, enterprise has been showing on free to air tv for a few weeks now in oz.
i watch and enjoy the star trek shows (apart from ds9) but would not consider myself a huge fan. my favourite series was TNG!
i have struggled to enjoy this series so far and i am struggling to maintain interest.
i was wondering if the series has improved as it has progressed?
and please tell me that they have ditched the theme song!
