I use my radios mostly helping provide communications at outdoor events and so on, when time and funds allow I'll be erecting some antennas over the back garden. Lots of them out there. Pretty straight forward circuit and easy to keep running. Doesn't have all the "bells and whistles" of some of the modern stuff but will do a great job for you. My first HF rig was an FT-101. Had the external VFO with it, too. A good hybrid outfit. It was old when I got it, but it was in decent shape.
