I hold that the biggest rip-off is that A.I. got jacked, except a couple nobody cares about. I thought it was the best movie of the year, but because everybody was dumb and thought there were aliens at the end, it wasn't understood, and left out. Typical.

I didn't think there were aliens at the end, and I still didn't especially like the movie. First, Haley Joel Osment was too old for the role. A 14-year-old playing a 10-year-old who calls his mother "Mommy!" ??!! He needed a service pack or hot fix or something to adjust his behavior to his age. Also, if the makers of the robot were so smart and the robot was so perfect, why did he have such bad teeth?

I was a little indifferent and perplexed by Moulin Rouge, but I'm afraid to post that under the MR thread.

Just as I suspected! A conspiracy to frighten those who didn't like Moulin Rouge into submission! The directing seemed pretty 'alien' to me. (and to those who decide the nomination for the Academy Awards apparently)

The truth is out there.

Jerry, LOL.

Haley Joel Osment is talented and everything, great in 6th Sense, but I thought he was very wrong for AI, or at the very least they needed to adjust the material to fit his actual age group. That "Mommy!!" thing gave me the willies every time.

As far as Moulin Rouge, to be fair, there were presentation problems with where I saw it. Very short-throw auditorium, large screen, keystoning, dim grainy image, with light from the booth washing out part of the screen all the time. I should rent the DVD and give it another try...

I'm told Fox Searchlight is freaking out and wanting to see all our passlists for The Deep End. They paid to have almost all guild members passed in and yet it received zero nominations.

And I totally agree with you James. I think the Hedwig soundtrack rocked and I feel that any single song from Hedwig is far better than any of the nominated songs (and I loved Moulin Rouge)!

First of all... AI kicked my royal ass. I loved it.. COuld have done without the part in the middle, you know, between the opening and closing credits...

Moulin Rouge was my favorite film of the year. No nomination for song? Pearl Harbor? I think the japanese need to bomb the awards ceremony just when they award pearl harbor for anything.

Where was memento? i didnt see it in the noms.. Did i miss it, I hope I didnt just forget it ws there, or did the voters... cant remember..

Ive said enough.. damn oscars.. full of oscar crap...

No Samurai for Best Picture...that's a bummer. I wonder if LOTR well get the award again for Sound Mix. I still think Master and Commander had the better mix. As for sound editing, I'll still go with Master and Commander. As for the other nominations, glad to see LOTR do exceptional, glad to see Cold Mountain did not do so well (it wasn't THAT good), and very happy for all the nominations that Lost in Translation garnered. Go BIG BAD BILL!

I think this year's collection of nominees seems a bit better on average than previous years. There's only a few obvious omissions.

"American Splendor" should have received a Best Picture nomination along with a nod going to Paul Giamatti for Best Actor. But the academy is too stuffy to give praise to a movie based on a comic book everyman. And Paul Giamatti is not some good looking leading man type like Jude Law. Still, he put forth one of the best performances of 2003.

I haven't seen "Lost in Translation" yet. But it is kind of cool to see Bill Murray get a Best Actor nomination. It is even more amazing to see Sofia Coppola get a Best Director nomination. I guess she found her calling. It certainly wasn't acting in front of the camera; it's tough to get that dull performance in "Godfather III" out of memory.

FINDING NEMO for Screenplay?! Are you kidding me? Good movie, not a great screenplay. Kill Bill was far better. I don't think it will win, but it shouldn't have gotten a nod.

I was happy to see Johnny Depp for Pirates, I thought he'd get passed over due to the type of film it was. Overall it was a decent line up.
