I just heard a news report that nine of the nineteen 9/11
hijackers were stopped for screening on September 11th, eight
because they fit security profiles or because of questions about
their identities, and one because he was traveling with two others
who fit the profiles.
After interrogation and inspection all were permitted to board
the aircraft with their box-cutters, which were not prohibited on that date.
Relatives of some who perished are asking for an investigation.

In the US a majority of the pilots are ex-military, meaning that they have formal training in the use of firearms.
