To really annoy someone, play their game. Just say something like "Incest Insurance Company...would you be interested in trying our low-premium, full family insurance policy? We provide medical, dental, and auto insurance for every member of the family, for just $9.95 a month..." Usually at this point, you hear a click.

I'll have to try the 8 thing, see how that works.

I think the absolute worst one I've used on somebody is "Pete's Abortion Clinic, you rape 'em, we scrape 'em." Even though it sounds fake, they don't want to talk to the guy so f*cked up to say it.

Does anyone have one of those boxes from Radio Shack and does it really work? I am just curious? I do not have a home phone just a cell phone so I don't get too many telemarketers calling but when I do I get really pissed. I believe that it is illegal for a telemarketer to knowlingly call a cell phone. So if you get a telemarketing call, even at home, you can tell them that they are calling a cell phone and are breaking the law.

Had another one at home the other night. This time it was soliciting newspaper subscriptions.

I pressed 8 and held it down for about five seconds. The line was still open.

Again I pressed 8 and held it down. Three or four seconds later -- CLICK!

I saw a review on a technology show the other day for the "TeleZapper". Its a little box that you plug into your phone line that generates a pulse tone every time you pick up the phone. This is the same tone that is generated by the phone company when the line has been disconnected. The majority of telemarketers using computers to dial calls will hear this tone, think its a disconnected line, and delete your number from their phonebook! They gave it really positive reviews saying that the number of calls they recieved dramatically decreased after having it plugged in for about a month.

Now if they would only come up with a program that sends a "no such email address" back to the spammers so they will drop me from their lists.....

There is. It doesn't work that well. Webwasher or one of the antispam program bounces the mail back the way a bad address would. The problem is that spammers use a dummy email address, so the bounce never gets to the intended destination. Periodically one of my autresponders will respond to spam. It'll get a bounce back every time because the sending address is faked.

These creeps no longer hang up whenever I hold down the magic "8" button.

No matter how hard I try, no matter how long it takes, they stay on the line!

Got any new ways to get rid of these lowlifes?

Start moaning and panting more and more as they talk.

Say things like "yes, oh hell yes!" using your best "bedroom voice."

This may take a while, but it ALWAYS brings a deathly silence on the other end of the line.

To keep in practice, I sometimes do this while talking to friends.

Telemarketers work based on sales per hour. They have a certain quota they have to meet. Next time you could try this, listen to them for 30 seconds or so, just enough to figure out the basics of what they are selling. Then tell them how interesting and wonderful that sounds, but cut yourself off mid-sentence and say "oh wait a minute, there's someone at the door. Don't hang up, I'll be right back."

Then press HOLD or put the phone down and see how long they wait.
That won't necessarily get you off of their calling list, but at least you are passing back more aggravation than they are calling you.

Charles -- Try holding down the "9" instead. Maybe they are used to the tone of the "8" by now and have adapted to it.

What I do is try to have a nice conversation with the person. The other day, they started their whole spiel, and I said, "Before you try to sell me something, I think you should know that even if I want it, I have no money to buy it." --moment of silence, then laughter.-- I explained to the lady that I am a starving college student living off of Ramen noodles because I frivolously spent all my money in high school. We had a nice chat about school and how when the operator went to college... a good 15-20 minutes!

Screwing with them is definitely funny. But as far as the 8 thing, if they don't hang up, why not just say "I'm not interested" and hang up on them? Why force them to hang up?

And if you have Caller ID and the number doesn't show up, why would you even answer the phone? They won't leave messages, so just let the answering machine get it.

I had a telemarketer call once and my roommate answered. They asked for the wife of Mr. Kyle Caudill. Well my roommate said he just got divorced from his wife and I am now his live in lover. My roommate was male. The guy on the phone just stumbled for a few minutes and so no he was sorry for bothering us.
