We keep getting them here, asking for the lady who had the number before we did. Mike brought up the point that I've always wondered about. HOW can these outfits make enough sales to remain in business?! They're disliked with a passion in all walks of life. You would think even the little ol' ladies would've wised-up by now and ceased to buy from them. If the tactic never worked, it follows they would eventually fade into obscurity. USA (1774.21 miles northeast of Dallas) Registered: Jun 99 posted 02-03-2003 06:03 AM                        The telemarketers who really irk me are the "placement firms" who somehow manage to get my work phone number and then call me at work and ask if I'm looking for a job. That just feels really tacky and inappropriate to me, especially since there are few legitimate ways in which they could have gotten my work phone number. Do they really expect people to say "yes, I hate my job and am actively searching for a new one" while sitting among co-workers? (especially since I enjoy my "real" job and have no intention of leaving!) I also dislike the vendors who call me at work who clearly have gotten my phone number from the InterNIC "whois" database, which is a listing of contacts for domain names and IP address space. It's an important resource for getting in touch with people to solve technical problems and reduce network abuse; it is explicitly not for commercial use. Unfortunately, some salesweasels don't read the notice to this effect that is returned with every whois query. This is a source of a fair amount of email spam, too. Needless to say, I don't do business with spammers or anyone who uses the whois database for sales leads.  |  IP: Logged Barry Martin Expert Film Handler Posts: 203 From: Newington, CT USA Registered: Jul 2002 posted 02-03-2003 10:22 AM                        Leo, I think I recall hearing that (at least over here) it is illegal to call cellular numbers for telemarketing because the cell customer is paying for that call. It's not like your home line where you bill is the same whether someone calls you or not. I have yet to decide on a cellular provider so I can't speak from experience, just what I've heard. My favorite calls still remain the ones where the computer picks up and either presents me with 10 seconds of silence (plenty of time to hang up) or asks me to please be patient, an operator will be with me shortly. Um, yeah, you called ME and interrupted what I was doing and now you want ME to wait? I mean, if you examine it, everything that you are not happy about in your life, is really, directly or indirectly, YOUR FAULT. You lie awake at night staring at the ceiling wondering "Where did I go wrong?" and then you remember about 50 or 60 places where you went wrong! Then you blink and the clock goes from 3:07 AM to 8:15 and it's time to get up and get ready for work. I was getting them constantly, and now nothing. Now, if I can ONLY get rid of all of those email that I get from Britney Spears offering me Viagra! Anybody that knows me knows that I dont need it.
