Posts: 4143 From: Boston, MA Registered: Apr 2002 posted 05-30-2003 01:33 AM                        I just moved over a far bigger distance. That is, from Berlin to San Diego. I saw it as a chance to get rid of a lot of stuff that I had kept for years and never really needed. I didn`t bring anthing specifically to remind me of where I come from. If I forget, I can look into my passport. On the contrary, I see a physical move as a good opportunity to start over and I brought as few things as possible. Not only because it is expensive, but also because it is much more fun to start from scratch again. Don already brought me up to Door county on one of my trips, it is a beautiful place--too bad he couldn't get my butt out of bed earlier that day because he said there was a lot more to show me! It's funny because when everyone was talking about Door county I thought they were saying Doare or Dowre county because of the accent...I didn't actually realize it was Door until we got up there and I saw a map sitting on the counter of a custard (Ice Cream!!! ) stand. Speaking of accents... I was installing a new proximity detector in a MK-IV automation several years ago. The projectionist assisting me in this was a Wisconsinite. Just like I am prone to do, if I feel comfortable around someone, my native accent slips in. This fellow was in full cheese-speak mode... The work I had to do involved moving a couple of wires off the old terminal block, and onto a new board that came with the prox. As we were finishing the job, the projectionist said, "What about the black?" I looked at the wiring. "Which one?" "The black, the BLACK!", he said. I explained, "We don't do anything with the black, we just moved the red and the green." We're more inclined to stretch out our "ooohhhs" and add "eh?" at the end of things.... It was damned annoying. Later he realized that people were making fun of him and he changed his habit to "hmmm". Up until the day I moved, I assumed the accent in "Fargo" was exaggerated. It was not! People really do talk that way up there! Of course, I went from one extreme to the other.
