I assume it sold out in Bakersfield as well. the sign that was up on Thursday was down by Sunday. Tickets here for the marathon were $25 bucks. Regular admission to a single movie tops out at $8.25, so its only 25 cents more then seeing all three seperately in prime time.

I wonder if anyone at these theaters has thought about this.

Customer buys a ticket for a few hundred bucks via Ebay. Customer attends triple feature at your theater. Film stops/melts/throws and then you have customers screaming about all the hundreds of dollars they paid, not necessarily the $8 or so of your admission price.

While sure it's not your problem to reimburse more than the $8 or so, but I'm wondering just what kind of a problem this could be for the managers on duty. (These theaters should put an extra projectionist on payroll not to get farther than 15 feet away from the projectors on that one screen for this event.)

I think I am going to stay home, watch the extended DVDs on my home theatre system THEN go to my theatre and screen the print BY MYSELF. I don't think I could stand watching "Return of the King" with a bunch of other people anyways (fans or not). Nowadays people tend to be idiots when they get in a room full of other people......... (Of course add everything into the mix that Brad just mentioned and things could get really out of hand - I can see the headlines now: "Local theatre riot during LOTR marthon, story at 6")...........................

Anyone else find it amusing that in this thread people seem to be complaining about the "lack" of prints that are being released for the extended trilogy, however, in other threads there are complaints that too many prints of a certain movie gets released and that is one of the major problems in our industry. You guys can't have it both ways.

Brad is right here. The problem is that a lot of people in the marketing area have no knowledge of and no feeling for the cinema. So they can`t actually market it effectively and wisely. They should rather market bananas. And then they come up with this over-the-top piracy thing to have a ready excuse for bad films. Yes, "The Hulk" did not suck enormously, it was pirated, that accounts for its failure.

One of the local newspaper quote-whores wrote a ga-ga story today about Return of the King.

She referred to the theaters that played the 2 re-releases as "hand-picked, deluxe theaters". [Roll Eyes]

The UA Union Square didn't get the 2 re-releases yet is more deluxe than the Loews E-Walk. The AMC Hamilton didn't get the 2 re-releases yet has better presentation than the Loews New Brunswick.

The quote-whore also said John T's theater plans to open 5 prints of Return of the King. The reason for the 5 prints in a 13-plex? "Multiple screens are a must for the expected demand and hoped-for profit", per the theater's owner. The quote-whore doesn't have a clue about film rental terms. Also, if a 13-plex holds 5 prints for the 2nd week there might be no room for Xmas Day releases and/or early-December holdovers.

Charles-In the final analysis, we are getting four prints. This is due to the length of the film. We have to be able to offer attractive starting times. Besides, there is only Mona Lisa Smile opening on Friday. By Christmas Day we will be able to accomodate the other releases (4) due to some creative booking by our principal owner. As of now, we will not be running House of Sand and Fog.

Early December holdovers will be double booked where possible. There's an old saying: "You book for today, not tomorrow."

The AMC digital preshow currently has a segment on how "Trilogy Tuesday" went. It runs before the Pre-Show Countdown.

LOTR geeks are just like Star Wars geeks. The one thing I want to tell them is "Get a Life!"
