An interesting question would be if the dog approached the murderers, or they went after it to kick it. The story doesn't say. And it probably won't since the media is notorious about not following up on stuff.
quote: I think the key to resisting the urge to be mean to a dog or cat that's annoying you is to think of it not as a "thing", but a living being that has feelings and needs.
That's where the distinction between cruelty and survival of the fittest comes in. As much as people hate to admit, humans are nothing more than animals as well. Smarter, stronger, more sophisticated animals, but we're still animals. We just choose to justify our instincts with reason.
If an animal feels a threat from another, whether it be the threat of injury or mental anguish due to the other animal making an incessent, unnecessary noise, instinct kicks in (no pun intended) and the animal acts. If I felt threatened by a dog barking and running up to me as I walked to my car(and I'm scurred of dogs) you bet your ass I would smash my shoe in its face.
However, I doubt that was the case with this little, 2-pound dog. Chalk it up to the animals/humans killing for pleasure, I guess. But cats do that too. It's all instinct. Turn on the TV and you'll see humans kill EACH OTHER for pleasure all the time.

Here's another animal related thing. I'm not sure if this really belongs in another thread. It does bring up the one area where I do regard animals with suspicion: vicious dogs.
There's a good number of people killed every year from being mauled to death by a vicious dog, typically with the dog being a pit bull. An 8 year old boy was mauled to death (either today or yesterday) by his father's four pit bulls. Here's the story from the Associated Press:
quote: CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (AP) -- An 8-year-old boy was mauled to death by his father's four pit bulls, and prosecutors were considering charges against the father ranging from child neglect to murder.
Roddie Philip Dumas Jr. was attacked in the fenced-in yard of his father's home Friday. Neighbors and a postal worker who heard the boy's screams rushed to the scene.
The boy's father, Roddie Philip Dumas Sr., 29, and his girlfriend, were inside the house but did not come outside until the dogs had already severely injured the boy, officials said.
"One had him on his neck. Two had him on the side. And one had him on the leg," said Edward Threatt, a neighbor. "They were pulling on him just like you do a rag doll."
A letter carrier threw his mailbag and then a wooden block at the dogs, which then ran away, Threatt said. But neighbors and police said the father then came outside and told the letter carrier to get off his property.
The boy was taken to a hospital, where he died.
After searching Dumas' home, police charged him with drug and firearms felonies.
Prosecutors were considering additional charges ranging from child neglect to murder, although a murder charge is rare in such cases. Police said they want to find out why the boy was unsupervised and whether the adults in the house heard him cry for help.
Dumas was in jail Saturday on a $233,000 bond. A message at the jail referred callers to a Web site and it was unclear whether Dumas had legal representation.
Animal control officers seized the four dogs. It was not clear whether the dogs have a history of violent behavior.
More and more, this "culture" of having vicious dogs often shows the same, scumbag traits in the dog owners. Many of these pit bull owners are either inner city black gang-banger wannabes or white trash, toothless hillbilly, gun-toting crank dealers. There's a kind of "I'm the man" bragging and violent paranoia that seems to go hand in hand with many of these dog owners. That's just something I think any responsible human being needs to think about before running out and buying a dog that doubles as body armor and eats kids or elderly people.
It's no surprise the dead boy's father got busted on illegal drugs and weapons charges. I doubt if the Charlotte, NC district attorney's office will be able to make a murder charge stick. But if there was any justice in the world, that bastard would be castrated so he could not have any more kids and would be banned from ever owning an animal again. Needless to say, the four dogs will probably be destroyed, all thanks to that asshole guy.
Sure, there are pit bulls that are nice and lovable dogs. But it seems more and more rare to find them. Animal experts liken the responsibility of owning such a dog with the greater responsibility of caring for other dangerous animals, such as a wolf or mountain lion. I tell you, the really sick thing is that a bunch of guys in America will hear about the death of this 8-year old boy and that will actually make them want to own a pit bull even more. F**king perverts.
