I've always had trouble with my teeth, they're very brittle, and bits keep breaking off them. My first teeth were the same.
I always hated going to the dentist, the injections were the worst thing, after having had a few I always insisted on having any fillings done without one.
When I was 20, 27 years ago, I had to have an extraction done; I'd had one done before, but for some reason, there was something more major about this one, and they said I had to take somebody with me. At that time my mother was still alive, so she came with me. They explained that I was going to have to have an anaesthetic, and I might be a bit drowsey afterwards, so she would make sure I was ok on the way home.
The gave me an injection in the arm to put me out, rather than just a local in the gum, like they normally did. When I came round I felt terrible, they said that they'd given me gas to keep me under. Most people came back out into the waiting room just a few minutes after coming round, and were able to walk out of the building after half an hour or so. It was nearly an hour before I could even get out of the chair. I then spent several more hours in the waiting room, until the surgery closed, and they told us to leave. I still wasn't able to walk properly, so I had to sit on a seat outside. It was late that evening when I finally got home, the extraction had been done in the morning, and I really thought I was going to die. I'd collapsed several times on the way home, had been bring up blood, was unable to speak for several days, had terrible headaches, saw bright lights in front of my eyes.
I still don't anow if they did something wrong, or I just reacted very badly to whatever it was they gave me, but I swore that I would never again go near a dentist agan; and I never have done. I've pulled a couple of teeth myself, and many others have just broken up, and come out in pieces over the years. I don't have much left now, apart from a few at the front.
I actually had a relative who was a dentist, I only met him a couple of times, he died when I was very young, but he was a really frightening character. He had been an enthusiastic supporter of the Nazis, not that unusual in itself, many people here, including the future King of England, were at least sympathetic towards them in the early days, but he remained so until the day he died. He sincerely belived that they never did anything wrong, it was all lies put out by the nasty Communists, that Hitler was a really nice bloke, and that Britain should have joined with him to fight the Russians.
With those two experiences, is it any wonder that I don't like dentists?
