Brilliant move almost 40 years ago to tear down an architectural masterpiece of a railroad station (Pennsylvania Station aka Penn Station) and build a sports arena (Madison Square Garden, site of the GOP confab) atop it, while the busy train station is compressed into the basement level.

I'm afraid that was the work of idiots.

* drowning

* getting caught in a tunnel collapse

* cottage cheese

* Gary Busey

* subway third rails

* spiders

* Los Angeles

* elderly drivers

* buttermilk

* angry rabbits (they bite!)

* motels in eastern North Carolina

* sour cream

* falling into a vertical pipe in the ground 18" wide and 100' deep.

* fungi

* Gina Gershon (but afraid in a "good" way)

* wasps

* poisonous snakes

* attorneys

* arriving at work and only then realizing I'm only wearing boxer shorts.

* people who insist a 1280 X 1024 pixel video image looks better than 35mm film done right.

Several weeks ago, my company sent a fleetwide message asking us to be vigilant and report anything that seemed askew. The thing is, companies have a pretty good handle on where their trucks are, what they're hauling, who's driving, and whether or not they're making scheduled appointments. Some of the photos of Penn Station's last days show that it was in pretty poor condition. It had some remodeling at the front, was about as messy as the subway stations in the 1970's, all that square mile or so of glass panes in the roof/ceiling was grungy/oily/nasty etc. It was huge, cranny-dense & a custodial nightmare. The roof alone would have been a major, expensive, ongoing cleaning project.

I think that story is from the NY Times about the destruction of Penn Station which has the line like "a city gets the architecture it deserves", but it also mentions that "in the end, they couldn't even keep it clean."

I'm afraid that if I had Bill Gate's billions I would buy up MSG and rebuild Penn Station as it was. That and the nationwide network of 70mm & Cinerama venues.

(My other brilliant idea to lighten Bill's pockets was to overhaul the SS United States and since the conversion from steam turbines to combustion turbines or diesels would make it a motor ship it would be renamed the MS United States. Get it? But someone has already taken this on.)

-drowning
-losing my mind
-getting lost
-finding my mind
-Brad and Joe b/c their pictures get madder looking every time
-that cap code will soon appear in everyday life
-anyone who carries both a gun and a camera
-brainwraps
-film break alarms
-having Right Said Fred come back
-spiders

I'm afraid of:

Snakes! (Disgusting, wily creatures.)
Tornadoes (been too close to too many)(I grew up in Ohio)
Heights (which is why I don't work for the power company)
Electrical burns (see heights)
And most importantly:
"I'm more afraid of being nothing, than I am of being hurt." (Guess the actor and movie)

I'm afraid of

- Drivers too busy yakin on their damn phones to notice lil old me on my bike
- Heights
- Small Spaces
- falling
- damaging film
- being left out or behind
- people ignoring me
- being misunderstood
- mass market radio destroying the chances of having anything decent on the dial to listen to.
- large quantites of moving water (Think Hydroelectric power)
