I guess I am one of those "old farts" mentioned in earlier posts. I started in cinema at the age of 11 (highly illegally, I might say) in 1957 at the old Pix Cinema in Belmont, a suburb of Geelong, Victoria, winding film during Saturday matinees. Since then, I have "messed about" with 16mm as well as 35mm. I have always regretted never having had the chance to handle 70mm. As I am now 58, that makes around 47 years in the biz, and still loving every minute of it.
I started on Simplex with Calder HI carbon arcs and 2000 ft. spools, manual changeover (sliding bar on the wall above the ports, with sound changeover by foot operated switch set in the floor. I now work casual shifts at an 8 screen complex here in Geelong. Kinoton FP50Ds, Kinoton platters and xenons between 2K and 7K.
By the way, Phil, you are quite right - one has to keep up with the times.
