This was cooked up a few years ago by the British advertising agency that handles the Mini Cooper account (if you look closely, the robots are built out of Minis). There was also a little booklet that got included in copies of Esquire magazine that purported to be an 'investigation' of mysterious robot sightings in the UK. The whole thing was just marketing.
