The first time I was out of Brooklyn to college in Indiana, a typical midwest winter hit and not knowing about those winds blowing across the flat plains, I went to class dressed as I would in a New York winter. Only in IN it turns out the winter lasts for six months and one day it was 45 degrees and when I ventured out to class the next morning it was 10 degrees and the wind was something like 60mph. I actually thought I was going to die right there on the path from my dorm to the lecture hall. Wind-chill was like minus 30 degrees. My ears froze. My fingers froze. My effin eyeballs froze. I was sure they would find me in a drift of ice sometime in the spring.

I shall retire in the south. But not anywhere near Florida and especially not Ft. Lauderdale. I went to visit a college buddy of mine who had moved to that area from Indian just two years ago. While I was there, I met some of his friends and while we made small talk I mentioned that I was going to visit relatives in Hollywood south of Ft. Lauderdale; said I was taking Rt 95. One of the women got very serious and said I should be very careful because 95 is very dangerous. I thought she was talking about snipers or car-jackers or some such, but she said, Oh no, it's the drivers.

In all my life since I got my license, I have only seen a single fatality on the road. In the two weeks that I was in Florida traveling on 95 between Ft. Lauderdale airport to Port St. Lucie where my friend lived and to Hollywood where my relatives lived, back and forth only 6 times, and I saw three....THREE freaking accidents with dead people laying covered with sheets and blood ooozing out all over the assphalt and a motorcylist with one leg detached while his cycle was about half a block away. I almost threw up. And no wonder; the people down there are insane.

I always thought, well Florida is full of old people and they drive REEEEEALY slow. Hells bells; I am doing 70 and these lunatics are flying past me at 90 and 100mph. And they drive 6 feet from your ass and flash their lights and honk cause you are going to slow at 70-80mph. And they NEVER, EVER use turn-signals, but zoom in and out of lanes without any warning. I used to think that if you can drive in New York City traffic, you can drive anywhere. Boy, did I learn.

Just this week my friend, after having a house build in Port St. Lucie only two years ago, emailed me that he just closed on that house....he is moving to Kentucky; he hates Florida. He says people are as rude as they are in New York City (I take offense at that) only they come down to FL and their brains get fried by the sun so not only are they rude, but they are insane as well.

Florida drivers take their cues from Las Vegas. The only difference is that when you drive too slow for people here you get shot. We average close to a one-per-day fatal rate here - about 350 people a year and growing along with our exploding population (5-8000 new people a month still moving here). I suspect any heavy tourist traffic area has similar numbers.

Snow? We get a dusting about once every 10 years. But I have seen pictures of it. Looks like it would be fun to live where there is lots of snow. I don't know what you guys are complaining about. [Big Grin]

Why would they show it on our news, you're too far away...
Actually they just showed snow chaos from the USA on TV. Unfortunately I didn't get where exactly.

Snow kicks summer's ass. All the complainers are just a bunch of babies. [Razz]

Taking a break from shoveling on Sunday. My sister, my brothers, and me(I'm in the red parka). With our dog, Tut(who was shivering by the time Mom figured out how to work the camera).

(No that's not a "visitor" in the window. It's a reflection from the tree.)

Man that wimpy east coast snow storm wouldn't slow down a moped! Here's a Denver storm from a few years back or so:

 -
This was about chest-height on the front walkway. My pet midget got lost under this and I was never able to find him again. I had to get a new one.

 -
The mailbox is also about chest height. Kick ass!

About 10 years ago, we had 1/4" of snow that stayed on the ground overnight...it even drifted to almost a 1/2"!!! It was horrible!

I heard about that. It shut down the entire LA area for weeks. Nobody knew what to do!

The snow arrived yesterday (arrived up North earlier this week)

Some photos taken in the city center

Has caused some disruption to the roads and railways (at least it wasn't the wrong type of snow) but has mostly melted in the city.

Hardly any snow in York, or anywhere between York and Middlesbrough (my commute to work), at any time this week. It has been seriously cold (my indoor/outdoor thermometer recorded -4.2 in the garden on Thursday-Friday night), but pretty clear where I am. There was a brief snow shower yesterday afternoon, but the sun had melted it all by lunchtime today. From what I hear it's been seriously disruptive in some parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, though.

September 21st, the last day of Summer! Telluride Colorado

 -

The view of the house across the street from Jim Bedford's house in Telluride. I was standing in Jim Bedford's house at the time. Being no fool, it was cold outside.

 -

Jim's hummingbird feeder. We didn't see any hummingbirds this morning. This photo taken moments before that slab of snow let loose.

 -

My car is the one in the middle. I drove to Denver today. It was mostly dry, but it was snowing on Vail Pass and Loveland Pass.

You're in Denver now? I thought the air smelled a little funny.
