I honestly believe that the only reason the word nigger is still around is because the blacks use it as a barrier between them and the rest of society (mainly whites, though.) If they didn't have it in any of its forms then they would have to conform to all other societal norms.

"Blacks can say it, whites can't. That's just the way it is." I heard that from a comedian on Def Comedy Jam, can't remember his name because he wasn't funny enough. I think that pretty much sums it up, blacks are going to treat themselves differently so the rest of society must do so also. As opposed to saying, "We are just as good as you and don't need to be treated different."

I have never met a single person that was not to some extent "racist." Ya know what, I think that is a perfectly healthy and natural thing. Peace, love and happiness is UN-natural. This does not mean that I advocate going out and doing harm to someone because they are a different race than you. I mean that it is natural for us to stick to our own kind and protect our own. There can be conditional peace between tribes, but it should not be forced the way that it is being force on us right now.

Point 1 - It's today's tempest in a teapot [*yawn*] - Janet Jackson's mammary, part 2.

Point 2 - As a 25+-year professional entertainer (my film days are long gone), if you're not hanging out over the edge of a cliff in some fashion, you're just "phoning it in." Bob Hope is dead. Not everybody has to be Sam Kinison, but if you're not taking chances, why not just write a book, or a joke for READER'S DIGEST? And, taking chances, sometimes you soar, and sometimes you fall on your butt. Did those people come to the Comedy Store because they wanted something safe and pre-digested?

The term nigger is now probably the most offensive word in English.
That has obviously been written by an American. I didn’t realise it was considered *so* offensive that it would be censored, especially for news and current affairs which are usually exempt from standard censoring.

Respectfully, I think the only person who can determine if a word or term is offensive or not is the person the word or comment is being directed at. I hardly think you can call a black person a nigger and then tell them they should not be offended, much less yelling that while your are visibly pissed off. Try calling a woman a cunt and then tell her she cannot be offended. Try calling a black woman a nigger cunt and if you live, let me know how long it takes you to heal. I agree that the selfish use of the word nigger by blacks is completely hypocritical. That, however, does not mean that a white person cannot still say it with ill intent. There is no equal word for whites. It is this ill intent that can make it offensive.

On one of the entertainment shows, a "reporter" asked one of the hecklers who started the whole thing if he plans on suing.

SUING?!?!?!?!?!?!? FOR WHAT!?!?!?!?!?

If they had behaved the way people are supposed to in society....oh wait, if I continue, then I could be accused of being racist myself. [puke]

And it's so much fun watching news anchors and such saying "the N-word" as though they're in kindergarten. Didn't that all start with the O.J. trial? PC run amok.

Who's up for watching "BLAZING SADDLES" with me? [beer]

First, let me say that anyone has the right to believe and say what they want. Equally so, anyone has the right to be offended by it and speak out against it. If you believe the former, you can't deny the latter.

I think it is short-sighted to generalize about any group of people. I don't use the word, my friends don't use the word and it is not because I want to use it as a barrier. I was raised to believe that the only thing that can make you a nigger is your own actions. If you want to act ignorantly and buy into bigotry - that makes you a nigger.

That being said, I have never found Michael Richards to be entertaining, (ever seen UHF?), and this doesn't make me a bigger fan.

Sounds like we are on the same page, Shane. I don't think that blacks are doing anything wrong when using racial slurs against whites and I don't think that whites are doing anything wrong when using racial slurs against blacks. I also don't think that someone on either side being outraged by it is wrong. The only way that it can be wrong is to physically act on it.

I don't use nigger in my regular vocabulary, I generally don't swear at all either. I do say cocksucker and cuntrag alot though. However, I will not try to spare someone's feelings by saying "the n word" when speaking about the term in an objective sense like we are now. I have no shame or guilt for my heritage and I certainly do not owe anyone the courtesy of choosing my words as to not offend them. If they allow themselves to be offended then so be it.

For the record, I really am not as racist as I know I appear. I even have a black cat. What I do hate though is hypocrisy and this idiotic concept of white guilt. The usage of the word nigger is at the core of that and that is why I feel so strongly about it. I really do believe in equality, just not the PC equality that we hear about all the time. My sense of equality is more of an 'every man for himself' attitude where noone gets any help.

Okay, here's my two cents on "nigger":

When the first white European explorers went to Africa they looked around and saw a lot of very dark-skinned "black" men. After their voyage(s) they got home and drew up maps to tell other people what they saw. They wrote "niger" (N-eye-jer), the Latin word for "black" to denote the place where they found the "black men."

Later on, when the slave raiders went to Africa they took along those maps. But, since a large portion of the average population of slave-raiding assholes were semi-literate, at best, they couldn't pronouce the word "niger" correctly and pronounced it "nigger" instead.

And, of course, it would be logical for your average semi-literate slave-raiding asshole to call the people they found "niggers", over time the name stuck.

These new black slaves, brought to the New World from primitive cultures (relatively speaking) would naturally seem like backward, uneducated, stupid savages to the European slave owners. It would be easy to opress a people like that, especially in a time when moral standards were so different.

The rest of the story is nothing more than a lesson in Southern American racist politics.

But, isn't it ironic that a word which we associate with semi-literate, uneducated, stupid assholes was, ITSELF, brought to use by stupid, semi-literate assholes?

And, with all that in mind, wouldn't it ALSO true that anybody who calls another person "nigger" isn't so much putting that person down as they are displaying THEIR OWN stupidity?!

Why does everyone assume that white people can't defend themselves or fight?

Also, this is pretty good to watch (might need to cut every frequency over 3.5K as you watch, though)

In the televised interview, everyone used "n-word" in place of "nigger".
Here's a better one... when Comedy Central (that bastion of nearly every foul-mouthed, lightly-censored comedian ever to play cable) aired "The Jerk" a few days ago, they actually muted all the "n-word" occurences!

Regarding the cultural double-standard: I've always been of the belief that either "the word" hurts or it doesn't... regardless of who uses it.

Jewish comedians also use a similar defense as well. I remember an episode of Family Guy that was not shown because supposedly it offended Jews because of the stereotypes involved in the episode. However Ive read that it was actually not shown because of some "offensive" material against Catholics. It's interesting that the good stereotypes of Jews were portrayed in the episode and not the bad ones, which is probably why the Rabbi approved it. Also, had Sacha Baron Cohen not been Jewish, I doubt Borat would have been well received in the Jewish community.

That ['The term 'nigger' is probably the most offensive word in the English language'] has obviously been written by an American.
It's also a very subjective statement to put in a dictionary. 'One of the most' or 'Possibly the most' would be on safer ground, IMHO.

Apparently British soldiers in Iraq have nicknamed Saddam Hussein Wogzilla, as a result of whichi they frequently have to explain to their American counterparts what a wog is (allegedly an acronym for 'wily oriental gentleman', UK English derogatory slang for someone of middle-eastern or Arab provenance).
