Though I will accept the Queen's English even though they say funny things like "tosh" and whatnot. Otherwise the only significant difference is the letter u missing or added here and there. No, English is difficult to understand not because of the German background, but because it isn't strictly a German background. Some words come from a German background while others come from the Romantic languages. It's a hodgepodge to say the least. For instance, if you tell most people that inflammable and flammable mean the same thing they'd tell you that you're wrong; but since that word isn't of German background the "in-" prefix has a very different meaning than if it were a Germanic word. One thing I think that we have going for English is the lack of stupid words that have a gender associated with it and different conjugation based on the gender. UGH! I HATED that in French. And then they have ridiculous things like 2 words for the same thing with different genders; like bicyclette is bicycle but it's feminine whereas vélo also means bicycle and is masculine and auto means car but that's masculine and voiture means the same damn thing and it's feminine. Oh and they make up their own words for things, especially when the general public already uses a word for it. Take computer; the French term is "ordinateur" whereas every other language has a word that sounds similar to the English one. Or with email, the Académie française decided that the terms being used were too close to sounding English, so they decided to use the term courriel. Ironically, this word originated in Québéc since the Québécois are sometimes looked down upon for not being real French people. Hell, they apparently banned the term "e-mail" from being used in any government-related documents since they made up their own word. I have nothing against French people, I just think that part of the language is plain stupid. edit: And English is EASY to learn. Therefore it is easy. I know how to spell words like disgusting, definitely and sequel. The rest of the world seems not to.
