Ayakawa Film God Posts: 2738 From: Waipahu, Hawaii, USA Registered: Aug 2002 posted 07-28-2007 01:11 AM                        Hey Chad, I think it would be better if we communicated with each other from now in standard English because our friends here might think Hawaiian pidgin is a rather demented way of expressing ourselves and we certainly should not give them the wrong impression. I am actually rather proud of pidgin because it represents an old part of Hawaii's culture. When my father and mother's parents immigrated from Japan to Hawaii around the turn of the nineteenth century between 1899 and 1903, the only way they were able to communicate with the English speaking white men was through the use of crude English known today as pidgin. Like you, I can easily turn it off or on and I use pidgin only when I have to but there are still many young people in Hawaii who cannot converse in standard English and have very limited writing and reading skills despite the fact that we have an excellent educational system in the state. Sadly, most of them will go through life with this handycap. I had made an effort to use standard English very early in my life when I was about ten years old and I can still remember some of my friends making fun of me because I was trying to talk like a haole (white man). I never let this teasing bother me too much and in time, they accepted the way I chose to speak. I use Hawaiian Pigin at work and most of them (95%) like it. Of course, when I converse with customers, I use regular English. Anyway, when I do goto Waipahu, I will look you up.  |  IP: Logged
