I totally agree, Joe. I always preach this to the higher ups in any theater I project for. Alas, it is very important to have a lobby, restrooms and auditorium(s) that are clean, comfortable and pleasing to the eye yet in the end, the projection/sound quality and the equipment in the booth is what really matters...after all, people attend movie theaters/drive-ins to see a movie, not attend an open-house of a "beautiful" building.
I would also like to add that as both an operator and a movie theater historian, I would personally conclude that a good sound system is more important than anything else. I have found that folks will downright avoid, if not also badmouth, a theater that has less than perfect sound.
I don't really recall what I thought of the Tamarac in years past however I did visit your theater in late '08 (I would assume you were there at that point) with my mother and a group of her friends to see "The Women" and was very impressed with the theater and even more with the projection and sound. I thought that it was pleasantly rare to see such quality at a multiplex(see my comment on CinemaTreasures).
My boss, a union operator, worked the Tamarac for a few years with his last gig there being a showing of "Mommy Dearest" when the picture first came out. Should you need any particular historical information regarding that theater or its equipment, drop me a PM and I will get it for you.

Right, Scott, and behind that subversion is usually the lusting after greater profits....and more that likely, those would be short-sighted, short-term profits at that.
There is a multiplex here in Brooklyn with a block long, beautiful stainless steel and glass, brightly lit, very inviting concession court. It's all shiney and sparkely and always fully staffed. Then you walk past that area and into this dark corridor with a dirty, dank rug that stinks of mold and then into small, ugly, dark auditoria where the odor gets worse and you sit there looking up at a 2:1 screen that are placed so high you come out with a crick in your neck. In the two biggest rooms, the screens are full scope, but with no side masking -- they just run flat without any side masking. It is as plain as the stains on some of the screens that all of the attention is given to the place where they pocket 100% of the profits and not where they might make only 40% or less. While the concessions area is well staffed....you'd have to stand in that corridor to the theatres screaming at the top of your lungs for an hour and even then you might not find a staff person to assist you for whatever.
Unfortunately, this seems to be the SOP pattern in many of the big chain multiplexs. They are assembly line operations, devoid of attention to patron ammenities or to presentation quality. They are sterile and unenviting....unless that is, you want to send the entire time at the concessions court. But it's hard fact that concessions is where the money comes from. How they don't see that in the long run, there won't be much profit from concessions if people don't want to come to their gawdaweful theatre to actually see MOVIES.
As for THX and the Chinese, you can't tell me that being such a high-profile tourist attraction, Lucas LTD. didn't consider it a marketing coupe to have their THX brand slapped on that venue. I am sure none of the test techs are lead into the theatre blindfolded so they are doing a true "blind" evaluation, not knowing what theatre they were in. Even if it's not done on purpose as in "let's make sure the Chinese gets a THX cert because it's good for the THX brand," there is the whole subtle, even unconscious influence exerted on the techs and their bosses. Like you can't tell me they wouldn't be more inclined to look the other way on certain parameters and let certain things slide if they were in, say Radio City Music Hall as opposed to Assbackwards Cinema 20.

Who was this union guy you speak of? Larry Leal? He is the only union operator at the Tamarac that I know of. However he died so I doubt that is him.
