Those were the numbers being reported by CNN, Fox News, and all the other unreliable "news" outlets. They are clearly pulled out of someone's butt, and rank as one of the most ludicrous statistics I've ever heard.

For your hemisphere maybe.
Out hemisphere's better than yours. [Razz] Just messin. Yeah, I'm less concerned over thw swine flu than the normal flu. Lets face it, any variety of the flu's a bitch, but unless you're elderly, an infant, or otherwise sickly (HIV or what have you) chances of dieing from it are rather slim. Kinda like getting struck by lightning 2x in the same spot while winning the lottery and watching hailey's comet. Yeah, I could have strung that along more, but I figured that was redicuous enough. I got something for the piggy flu [fu] . Hogwash.

Apparently, you spell 'our' differently there too. What crazy guys you all are.

In other Pig news...

Movies releases to be delayed.

Hollywood studios are postponing the release of their early summer movies in Mexico due to concerns over the spread of the swine flu, the Los Angeles Times reported today (Thursday). Particularly affected, the newspaper said, are the upcoming releases of Star Trek, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Angels & Demons. The newspaper noted that Mexico accounts for about 6 percent of all overseas box-office revenue. A delay, the Times observed, could undercut the performance of the films when they finally do open in Mexico since it would allow pirated copies to flood the market. Earlier reports had indicated that one of the few businesses in Mexico not hurt by the flu outbreak has been video rentals -- which are booming.

Has the media blown this out of proportion? Oh yeah. Has the government over-reacted to this problem? Perhaps a tad, but I'd rather err ont he side of caution. Few things to consider:

-I believe the virus has an incubation period of a week and a half. If that is true then we haven't seen the 'worst' yet.

-When this first started to a be a big deal governments and health agencies didn't have a crystal ball to see what would happen in a week. You only have past experience to go off of.

Perhaps over cited, but the Spanish Flue of 1918 should not be forgotten:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu
quote:
The 1918 flu pandemic (commonly referred to as the Spanish flu) was an influenza pandemic that spread to nearly every part of the world. It was caused by an unusually virulent and deadly Influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1. Historical and epidemiological data are inadequate to identify the geographic origin of the virus.[1] Most of its victims were healthy young adults, in contrast to most influenza outbreaks which predominantly affect juvenile, elderly, or otherwise weakened patients. The pandemic lasted from March 1918 to June 1920,[2] spreading even to the Arctic and remote Pacific islands. It is estimated that anywhere from 20 to 100 million people were killed worldwide,[3] or the approximate equivalent of one third of the population of Europe,[4][5][6] more than double the number killed in World War I.[7] This extraordinary toll resulted from the extremely high illness rate of up to 50% and the extreme severity of the symptoms, suspected to be caused by cytokine storms. The pandemic is estimated to have affected up to one billion people: more than half the world's population at the time.
And that was before trans-ocean air travel.

quote: James Westbrook
What can a doctor really do? It's a viral infection. Chicken Soup and bed rest.
If treated in the first 48 hours of infection anti-virals are very effective, after the first 48 hours of infection they wont' work.

But yeah, I'm not about to start walking around wearing a mask.

Amen! What's the news without giving the public something to worry about. Then they will watch our broadcasts and we can sell more ad time to the [bs] vendors.

Perhaps one should look at this particular flu outbreak and how it compares to others instead of simply citing unrelated outbreaks? This flu appears to give people a fairly mild case, it just happens that young and old are particularly prone to any sort of infection.

And if we're gonna cite outbreaks:
Again, more people died as a result of rushing the 1976 Swine Flu vaccine than people who died because of the disease. And more people were paralyzed from the vaccine than people who got the disease. It never materialized into a pandemic.

In short: We should NOT rush to action.

In Va. there have been two cases "believed" to be swine flu, both people had very mild cases and recovered without medical attention.

The media has latched on to this because the real news right now is boring. Chrysler getting another bailout? (YAWN) Obama's dog is old news. The Mideast is in turmoil - so what, it has been in turmoil for centuries, bring on something more interesting.

We've got no tornadoes, hurricanes or wildfires, the flood in Dakota is over, the whole idea of a black president is old hat, the first 100 days is history (as is the analysis of same), stock market is sitting still in the toilet with the "recovery" is stalled at the gate, Britney Spears has been making hits again (who cares about that? We want to see her crash and burn some more!) And so on and so on. Meanwhile the public health officials get to be on TV and the people making the face masks get to make some money...hey, it's good for the economy!

The pandemic will end when somebody tries to assassinate somebody or drops a bomb somewhere. Sad but true. Meanwhile, please buy face masks made in the U.S.A.!

The guy we buy janitorial products from has had masks on his website for years and sells about 5 boxes a month got a caller from Mexico yesterday wanting to order 25 million masks for immediate delivery with wire transfer of funds the day of shipment. Unfortunately, Ron says he can't replace the boxes he sold last week, none are available.

Paper masks won't do much good. They MIGHT lessen the chances of getting the flu but there is no proof. The only kind of mask that will prevent you from getting the flu is a positive pressure, full-face respirator... Provided you keep wearing it 24 hours per day.

You could touch a contaminated person or surface with your hand then touch your face, eyes or mouth and you would get the virus just as easily as if you breathed it in.

The best thing to do is to stay away from sick people or places where you might come into contact with sick people then wash your hands often with soap and hot water. Keep yourself in good health. Eat the right foods and stay indoors as much as you can until this problem passes.

The only people masks help are the people who sell them. [Wink]

Hey, if you have a verified swine flu case, I'll come lick their face right now. Apart from being recklessly brave, I really feel no concern over this at all. I eat reasonably well (when I eat), I work out, and I have a naturally effective immune system, from a long history of not being a baby about things. It is the people who get freaked out about this that have the most to worry about, because they are likely to have no resistance to pathogens because they take a bath in hand sanitizer every couple of hours.

Agreed!

If parents would make their kids go outside and get dirty instead of sitting indoors playing Nintendo all day long they would have naturally effective immune systems and these things wouldn't happen so often!

In 1976 only one person in the United States actually died from the swine flu. He was a 19 year old private from Fort Dix. All the other deaths were caused by major side effects from the vaccinations.
